BRENTWOOD, Tenn. – A pair of University of Tennessee at Martin representatives received Ohio Valley Conference accolades this afternoon as Ava Peters was named Co-Setter of the Week and Abby Freund was crowned as Freshman of the Week.
This marks the second award for both Skyhawks in the last 48 hours as these two also each brought home Carrie Yerty Classic All-Tournament honors on Saturday evening.
Today's announcement is also just the 12th time in school history (first time since Sept. 5, 2022) where UT Martin has claimed multiple OVC Players of the Week on the same date. Peters becomes only the fifth player in program history to win OVC Setter of the Week (first since Oct. 28, 2019) while Freund is now the seventh Skyhawks to ever boast OVC Freshman of the Week status.
Peters enjoyed a breakout weekend at the tournament hosted by Memphis, handing out 117 assists (9.75 per set) to go along with 18 digs, 11 kills, four blocks and a pair of service aces. The 6-0 River Falls, Wis. native secured her first career double-double with career-highs of 52 assists (the most by any UT Martin player since March 29, 2021) and 10 digs while tacking on two service aces to guide the Skyhawks to a five-set triumph over Lamar on Saturday. She also registered 46 assists with six kills and five digs in four sets in Friday's tournament opener against Chattanooga while handing out 19 assists in the Saturday's weekend finale against Memphis.
On the season, Peters ranks fifth in the OVC with 8.13 assists per set while adding 36 digs, 22 kills, seven blocks and three service aces.
A 5-5 libero out of St. Peters, Mo., Freund made plays all over the court for UT Martin at the Carrie Yerty Classic, dialing up 72 digs (5.54 per set) in three matches. Her best match of the weekend occurred in Saturday's victory over Lamar, accounting for 32 digs – including a whopping 11 scoops in the shortened fifth set alone. She was also responsible for 24 digs in just four sets against Chattanooga on Friday while pitching in 16 digs on Saturday at Memphis in the tournament finale. She additionally provided 11 assists for the week – six of which came in the win over Lamar – and a pair of service aces.
Freund's 4.56 digs per set average currently sits third in the OVC statistical rankings as she has also contributed 16 assists and six service aces this fall.
The Skyhawks are back in action this weekend in Macon, Ga., taking on North Dakota and West Georgia on Friday, Sept. 19 before playing tournament host Mercer on Saturday, Sept. 20 as part of the two-day Mercer Classic.
