MEMPHIS, Tenn. – Sophomore John-Gregory Wilson equaled the best single-round score in school history in Round 2 of the Grover Page Classic as the University of Tennessee at Martin finished strong today at The Links at Audubon.
Wilson carded a 62 (-9) during the afternoon session today, piecing together seven birdies and one eagle in a bogey-free round. His eagle was a hole-in-one on Hole No. 12, a par-3 playing at 159 yards. The 62 matches Graham Sleigh (Round 2 of the TSU Big Blue Intercollegiate on April 5, 2010) for the best score in Skyhawk history. The Bolivar, Tenn. native is in first place in the 95-man field with a 133 (-9), two strokes better than a four-way tie for second-place that includes Central Arkansas' Vukasin Suturovic, Central Arkansas' Leopold Isserentant, Tennessee Tech's Haden Maxwell and Murray State's Peyton Purvis.
As a team, UT Martin ranks second in the field with a 549 (-19). That tally was boosted by a dominant 267 (-17) in Round 2, trimming 15 strokes off its Round 1 score of 282 (-2). Central Arkansas leads the team standings by seven strokes, thanks in large part to a 264 (-20) in Round 1.
"We took advantage of a lot of scoreable holes this afternoon after we did not do that in Round 1," Skyhawk head coach Austin Swafford said. "There were a lot of red numbers on our scorecards today and that was good to see for a season opener. John-Gregory put together a historic round this afternoon and put himself in a good position for tomorrow. I'm very proud of not only his effort but our entire team – we will look to close things out on a high note in Round 3."
UT Martin's nine players combined for 60 birdies and five eagles on the day. Grant Phillips was responsible for three eagles while Wilson and Ian Lambert also contributed eagles on the day. Drew Williams' 10 birdies tied Wilson for the most on the squad while Luke Caldwell and Luke Beadles each had nine apiece. Bryce Harmon's seven birdies were followed by Lucas Herring (six), Phillips (three), Lambert (three) and Jaden Morrell (three).
The Skyhawk trio of Williams (-4, 13th), Caldwell (-3, 18th) and Beadles (-3, 18th) each rank in the top-20 of the individual standings. Phillips overcame a slow start to finish with a 145 (+3) to complete the UT Martin scoring lineup. Competing as individuals were Harmon (143, +1), Herring (147, +5), Lambert (152, +10) and Morrell (153, +11).
Caldwell and Beadles each sank four birdies on the way to a team-best 69 in Round 1. Wilson's even-par 71 included three birdies while Williams' 73 (two birdies) rounded out the team scoring. Phillips shot 3-under on his final 12 holes of the morning, including two eagles in a seven-hole span before settling for a 74 (+3). Harmon dialed up a 73 with two birdies to pace the Skyhawk individuals while Herring (three birdies) and Lambert (two birdies) each carded 75's. Morrell made one birdie in Round 1, finishing with an 80.
Wilson's historic round paved the way for UT Martin in Round 2 while Williams tapped in eight birdies – including five straight on the front-nine – for a career-best 65. Caldwell and Beadles both notched five birdies on the way to 70's while Phillips' 71 included yet another eagle and a pair of birdies. Harmon managed a 70 (five consecutive birdies on the front-nine) in Round 2 and was followed by Herring (72, three birdies), Morrell (73, two birdies) and Lambert (77, one eagle and one birdie).
The Skyhawks are paired up with Central Arkansas, SIUE and Murray State for tomorrow's final round, which begins with an 8:30 a.m. shotgun start. UT Martin's scoring lineup will be spread out amongst Holes No. 1-4 while the four individuals will begin on Holes No. 16-18.
