DICKSON, Tenn. – The University of Tennessee at Martin seized control of both the team and individual leaderboards on Day 1 of the Austin Peay Intercollegiate, held at GreyStone Golf Club.
Led by 36-hole leader Grant Phillips, the Skyhawks rank first out of 16 teams with a 563 (-13) aggregate score. That mark is seven strokes ahead of second-place Western Kentucky as only three teams shot below par through two rounds of the tournament. UT Martin's 291 (+3) in Round 1 ranked second in the field before a phenomenal 272 (-16) in Round 2 was five shots better than any other squad in the field.
Phillips led the Skyhawk charge in both rounds as the junior from Marietta, Ga. shot a 137 (-7) on Day 1 of the event. That included a 71 with two birdies and 15 pars in the opening round before unleashing a career-best 66 with eight birdies – all coming on the final 13 holes – in Round 2. Overall, Phillips leads Tennessee Tech's Haden Maxwell by two strokes while sitting atop the 92-man field in par-4 scoring (3.60, -8) and fewest bogeys (three).
Drew Williams ranks sixth on the player leaderboard with a 141 (-3) while John-Gregory Wilson (143, -1) and Luke Caldwell (144, E) rank 15th and 18th, respectively, heading into tomorrow's final round.
UT Martin's first round tallies included Phillips' 71, an even-par 72 from Williams (four birdies), Wilson' 73 (three birdies) and Jaden Morrell's 75 (two birdies). Caldwell compiled a 77 with a pair of birdies during the morning session.
This afternoon, Phillips six birdies on the back-nine alone helped result in a 66. Caldwell followed closely behind with a bogey-free 67 (five birdies, 13 pars) while Williams sank seven birdies on the way to a 69. Wilson jotted down six red scores on his scorecard for a 70 to wrap up the Skyhawks' countable scores while Morrell recorded a 76 with three birdies to bring his 36-hole score to 151 (+7).
UT Martin leads the field in birdies (42) and par-4 scoring (3.97, -3). Williams' 11 birdies are the most in the tournament while he also ranks second in the event in par-5 scoring (4.25, -6). Caldwell ranks seventh in the field in par-3 scoring (3.00, E) while Bryce Harmon (78-74; 152 with three combined birdies competing as an individual) is tied with Phillips with a team-best 23 pars.
The Skyhawks' scoring five will tee off at 8 a.m. tomorrow alongside Western Kentucky, Jacksonville State (-4) and Tennessee Tech (E) on Holes No. 1-4. Harmon will start on Hole No. 17 and is paired with individuals from Austin Peay, Jacksonville State and Tennessee Tech.
