MARTIN, Tenn. – After a last-minute tie Sunday, the University of Tennessee at Martin soccer team looks for its first win of the season Thursday when it hosts North Alabama at Skyhawk Soccer Field in Martin at 7 p.m.
In the sixth minute Sunday, Peyton Cook launched a pass across the 18-yard box directly onto the head of Kylee Thompson. Thompson then sent the ball past the keeper into the lower right corner for the early 1-0 lead.
UT Martin's lead held for nearly 80 minutes until Keelyn Peacock and Leigha Dobbins set up Kennedy Horn for the equalizer in the 85th minute. Neither team could find any momentum in the last five minutes and the Skyhawks walked away from their season opener with a 1-1 tie. Mac Titus went the full 90 minutes in goal for UT Martin and ended the night with five saves.
The Lions are coming off an opening weekend that saw them go 0-1-1. North Alabama fell in its opener to East Tennessee State at home, 1-0, then tied Jacksonville State, 0-0, in Huntsville. Despite the lack of offense, even in the loss, the UNA defense has been on point through two games.
Madison Vukas has played all 180 minutes of the season in goal for the Lions and has let in just one goal. The graduate has faced 16 on-target shots in the young season and has 15 saves, which is currently the ninth most by any keeper in Division I. Offensively, Alice Bussey and Olivia Heinert have a team-high two shots each through two games and are the only Lions to place a shot on goal with one each.
Following Thursday's match, UT Martin will close out three consecutive home matches to start the season with former OVC rival Austin Peay, Sunday at Skyhawk Soccer Field at 7 p.m.
