MARTIN, Tenn. – The University of Tennessee at Martin's final tuneup for the 2025 Ohio Valley Conference Golf Championships is set for Monday, April 14 as the Skyhawks join Bellarmine, Morehead State and SIUE in the fourth annual Carpenter/Chaney Classic field.
Named after legendary OVC coaches Jerry Carpenter (UT Martin from 2002-20) and the late Dr. Rex Chaney (Morehead State from 1976-2014), the Carpenter/Chaney Classic returns to the Bluegrass State as the Country Club of Paducah will host the 36-hole match-play event. The Skyhawks won the inaugural Carpenter/Chaney Classic in Tunica, Miss. while Lindenwood took top honors at the 2023 tournament in Mims, Fla. SIUE claimed first-place honors in last year's event on the par-72, 7,014-yard Country Club of Paducah course.
A total of 24 players will be taking part in this year's version of the Carpenter/Chaney Classic as first-round pairings pit SIUE against Bellarmine and UT Martin against Morehead State at 8 a.m. After the Round 1 matches are completed, the second and final round will consist of a winner's bracket and a loser's bracket, teeing off at approximately 1 p.m. Each round will feature split tees off Holes No. 1 and No. 10 in eight-minute intervals.
Monday's forecast calls for mostly cloudy skies, a high of 77 degrees with a low of 48 degrees. A 13 mile-per-hour wind out of the west is expected with a 23 percent chance of precipitation.
Skyhawk head coach Austin Swafford's lineup for this event includes Jackson Twerdahl, Luke Caldwell, Jonathan Xoinis, Garrett Chumley, Grant Phillips and Drew Williams. Xoinis is 9.5-3.5 in his 13 match-play appearances at UT Martin while Chumley boasts a 4-2 mark in match play during his collegiate career. Phillips (2024 Carpenter/Chaney Classic) and Caldwell (2024 OVC Championships) have each tasted victory in collegiate match play while Twerdahl and Williams will be making their Skyhawk match play debuts.
