
UT Martin Places Second In Fourth Installment Of Carpenter/Chaney Classic

PADUCAH, Ky. – A pair of University of Tennessee at Martin golfers went undefeated today at the fourth annual Carpenter/Chaney Classic as the Skyhawks went 1-1 en route to a runner-up finish in the match play event held at the Country Club of Paducah.
Jackson Twerdahl and Grant Phillips each earned perfect 2-0 records on the day while Jonathan Xoinis, Luke Caldwell and Drew Williams also tacked on victories. Garrett Chumley also represented UT Martin today and put up a fight before falling twice.
The Skyhawks knocked off Ohio Valley Conference rival Morehead State by a 4-2 margin in Round 1 today, advancing to the tournament championship against SIUE. The Cougars, who swept Bellarmine 6-0 in the opening round, held on for a slim 4-2 win against UT Martin in the finals to claim the title. The Skyhawks placed second in the field and was followed by third-place Bellarmine, who defeated Morehead State 4-2 in the other Round 2 matchup.
"What a great day, honoring two coaches who have meant so much to our program and Morehead State," UT Martin head coach Austin Swafford said. "I was proud of our guys in the morning matches and how they came out of the gate. We were able to get a few early leads and extend those throughout the round. The afternoon was the complete opposite as we got down early. We couldn't make a comeback and fell a little short but I'm proud of how we competed and fought until the end. It was great to see that from the team this afternoon."

Caldwell got the Skyhawks started against the Eagles, winning 4&3 over Mitchell Gastright. Williams followed with a 2&1 victory against Seamus Bogan before Chumley battled but fell 3&1 to Remy Stalcup. Phillips managed a 2&1 triumph over Logan McCormick before the match was officially clinched via a 4&3 victory from Twerdahl over Gavin Augenstein. Xoinis added another win for good measure, recording a 2&1 triumph against Nolan Piazza.
In the finals against the Cougars, Phillips outlasted Will Simpson for a 1Up (20) victory that went past regulation, overcoming a 3Up deficit through 13 holes. Twerdahl also added on an impressive 3&1 triumph over Brady Kaufmann. Williams' decision came down to the final hole as both players tied No. 18 for a 1Up win by Parker Bruening. Chumley's match additionally wasn't decided until the final hole before he fell 2Up to Preston Bily. Xoinis (lost 3&2 to Alex Eickhoff) and Caldwell (lost 6&5 to Brent Reintjes) rounded out the UT Martin participants.
The Skyhawks head to the 2025 OVC Championships next week, traveling to Dalhousie Golf Club in Cape Girardeau, Mo. The tournament once again calls for 54 holes of stroke play from Sunday, April 20 through Tuesday, April 22 before the top four teams in the standings compete in match play on Wednesday, April 23.
