
UT Martin Begins Season-Long Homestand With Western Illinois This Weekend

MARTIN, Tenn.- The University of Tennessee at Martin baseball team will begin a season-long seven-game homestand this weekend when it welcomes in Ohio Valley Conference foe Western Illinois. Game 1 is set for Friday, April 11 at 5 p.m. with Game 2 taking place on Saturday, April 12 at 3 p.m. The series will wrap up on Sunday, April 13 at 1 p.m.

UT Martin (12-20, 3-5 OVC) has maintained itself as one of the best offenses in the conference. The Skyhawks are first in stolen bases (71), second in triples (11), third in both batting average (.280) and hits (290) while ranking fourth in RBIs (194) and slugging percentage (.421). The pitching staff ranks among the league leaders in conference play in fewest runs allowed (61) and earned runs allowed (50). UT Martin currently has the third most shutouts (three) in the OVC.

Brody Capps holds a team-best .314 batting average with 32 runs driven in (second in the conference). Jalen Fithian has stolen an OVC-best 21 bases while Arderrius Townsend is fifth in conference play with three home runs (seven total). Catcher Tommy Koch has caught 13 base runners stealing (second in OVC) and Blaze Bell is batting a crisp .311 with 26 RBIs.

Junior righty Jacob Sitton has fanned 28 batters and Mason Shropshire (team-best 14 appearances) has recorded back-to-back outings without a hit or run allowed. Jeb Bartle has two saves on the year with an impressive 29-10 strikeout-to-walk ratio. In his last three games, southpaw Zach Wager has struck out six allowing just one walk.

Western Illinois (7-21, 2-7 OVC) is fourth in fewest walks (122) and runs allowed (217) in the conference while senior Liam Bushey ranks inside the OVC's top-10 in batting average (ninth, .363) and hits (ninth, 41). On the bump, Jorge Romero has allowed the tenth fewest hits in OVC play (13) and Eric Rawlings has fanned eight conference batters looking which places him in third in that category.

Sitton (1-2, 5.05 ERA) will take the mound for the Skyhawks in Game 1 against junior right-hander Max Tripure (3-4, 6.20) for the Leathernecks. In Game 2, UT Martin's Wager (3-4, 4.99) squares off with Western Illinois redshirt senior righty Frederick Romano (1-1, 6.28). During the series finale it'll be junior righthander Drake Bayles (2-4, 7.43) on the bump for the Skyhawks and the Leathernecks' starter is to be announced.
