
Skyhawks Complete Season Sweep Of Alabama A&M

MARTIN, Tenn.- The University of Tennessee at Martin baseball team used a 10-run third inning to propel itself to a 16-2 run-rule victory over Alabama A&M.

Every single Skyhawk reached base safely in the contest with Blaze Bell (five RBIs, home run), Garner Anderson (four RBIs, double), Brody Capps (two walks, two RBIs) and Jonah Katsaboulas (two runs scored, two stolen bases) recording multi-hit games. Jalen Fithian (double, three runs scored, three walks), Arderrius Townsend (double, RBI, two runs scored, one walk), JT Popick (two stolen bases, two runs scored, two walks), Cameron Greene (two walks, two runs scored) and Frank Micallef (run scored) each played a role in the 14-run win.

Brandon King (1-1) secured his first win of the season by setting a new career-high in strikeouts (six) and allowed just one earned run on one hit. Kaleb Baskin pitched a clean inning with no hits and no walks while Mason Shropshire (one inning pitched, one strikeout, no walks, no hits, no runs) and Jeb Bartle (one inning pitched, no runs, no walks, one strikeout) also pitched well out of the bullpen.

Alabama A&M (8-20) struck first to take a two-run lead, then in the home half Fithian's leadoff double would later turn into a run scored for the center fielder who came home off a wild pitch. King settled in during the second frame with a ground out followed up with back-to-back punchouts.

In his first game back since March 14, Anderson delivered by putting a 2-2 count into left center field that scored three runs and gave UT Martin (11-18) the lead. During the third, King put up another scoreless inning by retiring the first two batters off a pop out and backwards K, the third out came from a runner caught stealing by Micallef.

The Skyhawks big third inning began with a Bell two-run single that plated Townsend and Katsaboulas. Popick drove in Bell on a groundout to second base, and Anderson added on more from a two-run double to make it 9-2. Capps made it back-to-back base hits on an RBI single which plated Anderson. Townsend sent a line drive down the left field line that scored Capps and Bell put the cherry on top of the third from a three-run long ball over the wall in left center field which would bring the score to 14-2.

King made quick work of the Bulldogs in the fourth with a pop out and two whiffs to bring his total to six on the evening. Baskin relived King in the fifth and forced a pop out that was shortly followed by a 4-6-3 double play. Shropshire compiled a 1-2-3 inning from a strikeout, groundout and pop out in the sixth. In the home half, Capps drew a bases loaded walk and Katsaboulas drove in the 16th run of the game on a groundout to third.

Bartle finished things off by inducing two groundouts and a strikeout to bring home the win in seven innings for UT Martin.

The Skyhawks will head north to play Eastern Illinois this weekend with the series beginning Friday, April 4 at 3 p.m.
