ST. CHARLES, Mo.- The University of Tennessee at Martin baseball team fell in a nine-inning doubleheader at Lindenwood. Game 1 went to the Lions 10-0 while Game 2 was a 4-3 victory for the home team at Lou Brock Sports Complex.
Â
Game 1: UTM 0, LWU 10
Drake Bayles (2-3) went 5.1 innings striking out one and was followed by J. Henry Hobson (1.1 innings pitched, one strikeout, no earned runs allowed) and JP Nunn (1.1 innings pitched, three strikeouts) out of the bullpen.
Â
Lindenwood (12-14, 2-2 Ohio Valley Conference) jumped out to the early lead in the first inning. Brody Capps and Arderrius Townsend would single in the second, but UT Martin (10-16, 2-2 OVC) was unable to drive them in.
Â
Bayles bounced back in the second with a 1-2-3 inning and worked around a two-out single to put together back-to-back scoreless frames. Two Lions reached to begin the fourth, they would quickly be sent back to the dugout when Bayles picked one off and then retired the next two batters in order. A no-hit fifth was up for the righty with him forcing two flyouts and a groundout.
Â
Lindenwood added more runs over the next three innings to carry itself to a Game 1 win.
Â
Jordan Hudson joined Capps and Townsend with a hit on the box score.
Game 2: UTM 3, LWU 4
Jacob Sitton started Game 2 pitching six innings and fanning five batters. Jeb Bartle (three strikeouts) and Mason Shropshire came in from the bullpen to relieve Sitton.
Â
The Skyhawks used a lead-off double by Jalen Fithian to score the game's first run from a TJ Grines single. A double play and groundout headlined a scoreless first inning for Sitton. The Lions went down 1-2-3 after Sitton induced two flyouts and a groundout in the second.
Â
Lindenwood equaled the score in the third, but Townsend hit his team-leading sixth home run to break the tie and give UT Martin a 2-1 lead. Sitton responded by striking out two in the home half and getting a flyout to end the inning.
Â
Two Lions were stranded over the course of the next two innings with Sitton getting three total whiffs and keeping the lead with the Skyhawks. Lindenwood tied the game up again, however in the top of the seventh it was Hudson who laid down a bunt to plate Townsend and make it 3-2, UT Martin.
Â
Catcher Tommy Koch caught his 12th would-be base stealer for the second out of the seventh inning and Bartle closed out the frame on a popout to his shortstop Cameron Greene.
Â
The Lions brought in the game's tying run in the eighth and the winning run in the bottom of the ninth.
Â
Fithian (run scored) led the team with three base hits while Grines and Townsend both recorded two base knocks. Capps and Hudson tallied hits and Koch drew a walk.
Â
The Skyhawks will reset and look to take the series finale tomorrow at 1 p.m.
