UT Martin Set For Home Conference Opener Against Southeast Missouri This Weekend

MARTIN, Tenn.- The University of Tennessee at Martin baseball team welcomes in rival Southeast Missouri to Skyhawk Field for Ohio Valley Conference opening weekend. Game 1 will be played on Friday, March 21 at 3 p.m. with Games 2 and 3 being featured in a nine-inning doubleheader on Saturday, March 22 beginning at noon. Game 2 of the twin bill will begin approximately 30 minutes after Game 1 ends.

UT Martin (8-12) leads the OVC in shutouts (three), stolen bases (48) and triples (10) while sitting among the league leaders in slugging percentage (second, .442), RBIs (third, 123), batting average (third, .281), runs scored (fourth, 136), hits (fourth, 183) and total bases (fourth, 288).

TJ Grines tops the conference with 15 stolen bases and hits a team-best .359 average. Jalen Fithian's 26 hits have him in 10th on the OVC leaderboard and Brody Capps has totaled 19 RBIs (seventh most in the league). Arderrius Townsend (team-high 1.030 OPS) and Capps have each hit four home runs which places them in a tie for eighth in the conference.

Junior righthander Drake Bayles boasts a 4.88 ERA (10th in OVC) with 20 whiffed batters in 27.2 innings pitched (seventh in OVC). Kaleb Baskin touts a 1.00 WHIP out of the bullpen (11 strikeouts to three walks) and Mason Shropshire leads the team in appearances (nine) and has fanned 13 batters. Reliver JP Nunn is coming off of a scoreless outing against Union on Tuesday where he threw 1.2 innings and struck out two.

Southeast Missouri (12-9) comes into the conference season ready to defend its OVC Tournament Championship. The Redhawks bring in two of the best arms in the league this weekend with Nathan Mertens (1.09 ERA, first in OVC) and Haden Dow (.158 opposing batting average, first in OVC). On offense, Michael Mugan paces the team in batting average (.360), OPS (1.091), hits (27) and total bases (49).
