MADISON, Ala.- The University of Tennessee at Martin baseball team trailed by just two runs heading into the bottom of the sixth, but ultimately fell 6-1 to No. 23 Auburn at Toyota Field in Madison, Ala.
Â
Tommy Koch (run scored), TJ Grines and Arderrius Townsend collected hits for the Skyhawks. Jalen Fithian drove in a run while Cameron Greene drew a walk.
Â
Zach Wager (1-2) threw 4.1 innings with Jeb Bartle (0.2 innings pitched, two strikeouts), Mason Shropshire (one inning pitched, one strikeout, no walks), Brandon King (0.1 innings pitched) and Austin Gast (1.2 innings pitched, no hits, no runs, no walks, one strikeout) making appearances out of the bullpen.
Â
After a runner reached second in the first inning, Wager left him stranded from three straight flyouts to work a clean frame. The junior dodged trouble in the second with two base runners being sent back to the dugout when a groundout to Greene ended the second.
Â
Auburn (14-3) got the games' first run in the third but left a runner on base when Wager forced a groundout to Grines. The Tigers were sat down quickly in the bottom of the fourth from an inning-ending 6-4-3 double play.
Â
Auburn added two more runs during the home half of the fifth before Bartle took over and struck out the final two batters of the inning. UT Martin (6-9) put two in scoring position following a wild pitch that helped Koch and Greene advance. The Skyhawks then capitalized off a Fithian RBI sacrifice fly to left center to cut the deficit down to two.
Â
The Tigers added three more runs to their total in the sixth and UT Martin was unable to cut into the deficit further.
Â
The Skyhawks head to the Bluegrass State this weekend for three games against Western Kentucky. Game 1 is slated for Friday, March 14 at 6 p.m.
