MARTIN, Tenn. – A road swing through the Sunshine State concludes for the University of Tennessee at Martin men's basketball team with the Pensacola Invitational, a multi-team event that also features Prairie View A&M out of the SouthWestern Athletic Conference, Southern Miss out of the Sun Belt Conference and North Florida out of the Atlantic Sun Conference.
The Skyhawks will open the tournament with a 4 p.m. matchup against Prairie View A&M on Saturday, Nov. 22 before the winner's and consolation bracket finals at either 1:30 or 4:30 p.m. on Sunday, Nov. 23. UT Martin is 1-1 all-time against Prairie View A&M (previously meeting in 2022 and 2023) and has not faced Southern Miss since its lone meeting in 2006. A potential matchup against North Florida would be the first time that the Skyhawks and Ospreys have met on the hardwood.
UT Martin (3-1) is coming off its first setback of the season, falling 87-73 at Florida State despite a valiant effort on Tuesday. The Skyhawks outrebounded their Atlantic Coast Conference opponent by a 41-34 margin and swished 40.7 percent (11-for-27) of their three-point attempts in a game that featured nine lead changes and seven ties. Andrija Bukumirović nabbed his second double-double of the season with a game-high 22 points and career-best 12 rebounds - giving UT Martin its first double-double against a Power 4 opponent since 2021 and its first 20-plus point double-double against such competition since 2009. Two-time Ohio Valley Conference Freshman of the Week Matas Deniusas (11 points) and Dragos Lungu (10 points) also scored in double figures for the Skyhawks, who are up to No. 16 in the SBNation Mid-Major Madness top-25 poll.
Prairie View A&M (2-3) brings an incredibly balanced scoring attack into the tournament as five players cracked double digits in the scoring column in a 91-73 loss at Missouri on Monday. Tai'Reon Joseph led the way with 17 points in that game as the graduate transfer out of UTSA is pouring in 18.8 points per outing.
All three of Southern Miss' (2-3) setbacks this season have come by six points or less, including an 83-79 overtime setback at South Carolina on Nov. 9. Leading scorer Isaac Taveras (20.2 points per outing) recorded team-highs of 13 points and eight rebounds in the Golden Eagles' 82-59 triumph over William Carey on Tuesday.
North Florida's last action came on Wednesday, falling 86-78 at Wofford. Kamrin Oriol added to his 20.5 points per outing scoring average with a game-high 22 points as the Ospreys (1-3) led 35-34 at the halftime break but could not withstand a Terrier comeback in a contest that included 13 ties and five lead changes.
