COOKEVILLE, Tenn. – For the second straight day, the University of Tennessee at Martin volleyball squad gained an early upper hand in its match against Tennessee Tech but the Skyhawks fell by a 3-1 margin (25-17, 18-25, 13-25, 18-25).
Kayla Bryant led UT Martin offensively for the second straight contest as the senior outside hitter landed 11 kills to go along with eight digs and a pair of service aces. Ava Peters handed out 30 assists tonight while Abby Freund and Kristin Phillips paced the Skyhawk defense with 15 digs and three blocks, respectively.
A pair of Bryant kills helped UT Martin claim a 6-3 advantage in the first set before two straight kills out of Kylie Surratt helped the Skyhawks stretch their lead out to 14-9. UT Martin did not allow the Golden Eagles to get any closer than four points for the remainder of the stanza, leading by as many as eight points down the stretch as a Surratt kill on set point gave the Skyhawks a 1-0 advantage in the match. Bryant had five kills on a .556 hitting percentage to go along with five digs in the first set for UT Martin.
Phillips accounted for a kill and a service ace to help the Skyhawks score four of the first five points in the second set. Tennessee Tech did not take its first lead in the second stanza until 9-8 before taking a 16-11 lead. A Bryant kill ignited a stretch of three unanswered points before a Carly Mueller kill willed UT Martin back to within two points (17-15). However, that was as close as the Skyhawks would get for the rest of the second stanza. Peters assisted on all seven of UT Martin's kills in the second set.
The Golden Eagles scored eight of the first nine points in the third set before a Bryant kill and block assist from Maddy Gladson and Mueller followed. Surratt later slammed down three kills over a four-point span for the Skyhawks but Tennessee Tech was able to take a 2-1 lead in the match. Surratt (three kills, no errors) and Freund (five digs) led UT Martin in the third stanza.
Bryant posted a service ace and a kill to help the Skyhawks race out to a 4-2 edge in the fourth set. The Golden Eagles then went on a 13-3 run before kills from Bryant and Dylan Sulcer got UT Martin back on track. Gladson dialed up a pair of kills during a 3-0 Skyhawk spurt in the latter stages of the set but ultimately it wasn't enough as UT Martin could not force a fifth set. Gladson's three kills on a .400 attack percentage guided the Skyhawks.
UT Martin wraps up its four-match road swing next week when it heads to Charleston, Ill. for matchups against Eastern Illinois on Thursday, Oct. 30 and Friday, Oct. 31.
