BRIDGEPORT, W.Va. – The University of Tennessee at Martin golf team completed 36 holes today at the Mountaineer Invitational, hosted by West Virginia at the Pete Dye Golf Club.
The Skyhawks were one of 14 teams who were able to get the full two rounds in today as a near-30-minute lightning delay in Round 1 prevented one of the 23 pairings from finishing due to darkness.
Taking part in the tournament as an individual, freshman Grant Phillips led the way for UT Martin today with a 152 (+8). Dax Isbell guided the five-man Skyhawk scoring lineup with a 154 (+10) and was followed by Jacob Uehlein (156, +12), Jonathan Xoinis (160, +16), Luke Caldwell (163, +19) and Ethan Ray (163, +19).
Phillips tied for the team lead with two birdies while also carding 12 pars in the first round, collecting a 74. The Marietta, Ga. native followed that with 13 more pars in Round 2, posting a 78.
The UT Martin trio of Ray (two birdies), Uehlein (two birdies) and Isbell (one birdie) each shot a 78 in the first round while Xoinis (79 with two birdies) wasn't too far behind. Caldwell tallied the lone eagle of the Skyhawks' opening round before securing an 81.
In Round 2, Isbell was responsible for a team-best four birdies and an eagle as he shot 3-under on the front-nine on the way to a 76. Uehlein followed with a 78 that included one birdie and 11 pars before Xoinis and Caldwell each tapped in two birdies apiece for scores of 81 and 82, respectively. Ray managed both of his birdies during a five-hole stretch and finished with an 85.
Phillips and Caldwell shared the team lead in par-3 scoring (3.25, +2) while Phillips and Isbell tied for the best par-4 scoring average (4.15, +3) on the squad. Uehlein's 5.13 par-5 scoring average (+1) led UT Martin while Phillips' 25 pars and Isbell's five birdies ranked as team-best performances in their respective statistical categories.
As a team, the Skyhawks shot a 313 in the first round and a 317 during the afternoon round for a 36-hole tally of 630 (+54). UT Martin was the only team in the 16-team field to record two eagles as there were only eight such scores in the 91-man field.
The Skyhawks will tee off tomorrow at 7:30 a.m. CT as Round 3 pairings will be determined after the final four golfers wrap up Round 2.
