MARTIN, Tenn. – Cranking up the spring schedule this week are the University of Tennessee at Martin rodeo teams, who start the first of five remaining regular season events this week in Meridian, Miss.
This week's rodeo hosted by East Mississippi Community College kicks off tomorrow and runs through Saturday, March 16. That will be followed on the Skyhawk docket by a rodeo hosted by Pearl River Community College on March 21-23 before the 56th Annual UT Martin Spring College Rodeo takes place on April 11-13. The regular season wraps up at Arkansas-Monticello (April 18-20) and Northwest Mississippi Community College (April 25-27) before the 76th Annual College National Finals Rodeo occurs on June 9-15 in Casper, Wyo.
The Skyhawk women's team currently ranks 22nd nationally and fourth in the Ozark Region after piling up 1,148.33 points in five fall rodeos. The UT Martin cowgirls came away with one victory (Nov. 16-18 in the fall finale at Murray State) while posting a season-best 425 points at the Three Rivers College event on Oct. 5-7. The Skyhawk men's team secured 440 points over the course of the fall semester, dialing up a season-high 230 points in a third-place finish in the Sept. 21-23 season opener at Missouri Valley College.
On the women's side, 10 UT Martin cowgirls rank in the top-15 in the Ozark Region in their respective events. Madde Shelton's 370 points in barrel racing is good enough for 22nd nationally and fourth on the regional level. She is one of five Skyhawks in the top-15 in the region in that event, joining Savannah Moran (270 points, fifth), Allie Maxwell (135, sixth), Josie Luttrell (70, 13th) and Ryanne Frecker (25, 15th).
Leah Pitts' 245 points in breakaway roping lead three UT Martin representatives in the Ozark Region rankings as she ranks fifth ahead of teammates Brianna Pugh (133.3, ninth) and Lainey Hutchison (90, 15th).
The sister duo of Emma Kate Wilder (header) and Anna Wilder (heeler) rank fifth in the Ozark Region with 200 points in team roping. Emma Kate also ranks seventh in goat tying (165 points) and 12th in breakaway roping (105) while Anna sits eighth in goat tying (130) and 12th in barrel racing (75).
