UT MARTIN BASEBALL TO CONTINUE HOMESTAND WITH SOUTHERN ILLINOIS TOMORROW

MARTIN, Tenn.- The University of Tennessee at Martin baseball team plays its fourth home game in five days when it welcomes in Southern Illinois on Tuesday, Feb. 20 at 3 p.m.

This matchup of the Skyhawks and Salukis will serve as the first part of a home-and-home series as UT Martin makes the return trip to Carbondale on Tuesday, March 26. This will be the fourth season in a row that the two teams have faced each other.

The Skyhawks hit .303 as a team in the season-opening series against Northern Kentucky. Senior second basemen Andrew Fernandez batted .545 with six hits, one double, one triple and one home run for a team-best 1.091 slugging percentage. Hunter McLean hit .500 in all three starts over the weekend while Will Smith and Mac Danford led the way with three RBI's apiece.

On the pitching side, Dylan Lapic (2.1 innings), Eli Martin (two innings), Davis Benton (one inning), Campbell Cleveland (0.2 innings) and Tucker Reed (0.1 innings) combined for three hits allowed while not conceding a single earned run.

UT Martin is expected to start junior right-hander Davis Gaston on the hill as he will make his Skyhawk debut. The Greenville, Ala. native earned four saves, two wins and fanned 43 batters in 49.1 frames in his career at Central Alabama Community College.

From the Missouri Valley Conference, Southern Illinois was picked to finish fifth in the preseason poll and bring back four All-MVC players, including Steven Loden (who hit .333 with three home runs over the weekend). The Salukis swept Northwestern State to start the year with 14 or more runs in all three games.

Southern Illinois is projected to start southpaw Alec Nigut tomorrow on the mound. The junior transferred over from Kirkwood Community College where he started 58 innings, went 8-4 and held a 4.78 ERA.
