MARTIN, Tenn.- In a back-and-forth offensive battle, the University of Tennessee at Martin baseball team came up just shy of victory to Southern Illinois, 14-11. The Skyhawks outhit the Salukis 15-14 and blasted three home runs on the evening.

Andrew Fernandez, Blaze Bell and Hunter McLean all went yard for UT Martin while Fernandez recorded his third straight multi-hit game, going 2-for-4. Skyhawk newcomer Jalen Fithian notched three base knocks with two RBI's while Mac Danford (double), Jackson Cooke (double) and McLean (triple) snagged extra-base hits.

UT Martin sent seven hurlers to the mound as Dylan Lapic (one inning pitched), Baylor Jones (two innings), Choyce Diffey (1.2 innings) and Eli Martin (one inning) all threw scoreless appearances for a Skyhawk pitching staff that fanned eight total batters.

UT Martin trailed early but stormed back in the home half of the second for six runs, which included a pair of two-run homers off the bats of Fernandez (second home run of the season) and McLean (first). Fithian punched one through the left side to bring in Cole Smith to begin his busy day at the plate.

After the Salukis tied the game, Jones was called on from the pen and threw two scoreless innings with one punchout and only one hit allowed. Once again, the longball would come into play for the Orange and Blue when Bell drilled a 1-0 pitch over the right field wall. That was shortly followed by yet another Fithian RBI single to score Smith.

Southern Illinois would respond well with big innings in the sixth and seventh to take the lead. The Skyhawks answered with an RBI double by Danford in the bottom of the sixth (plating Bell) and an RBI single from Zac Rice (scoring pinch runner Benny DeTrude) to get within striking distance. However, the Saluki bullpen did not allow a hit over the final 2.1 frames.

UT Martin will be back at home on Friday, February 23^rd at 5 p.m. to start a three-game series with Ivy League member Brown.
