NASHVILLE, Tenn. – The University of Tennessee at Martin softball team had to outlast not only Saint Louis but also inclement weather in the opening day of the Roar City Classic but came out victorious after posting a 5-0 shutout on Friday afternoon.
The Skyhawks (2-3) jumped out to an early lead with three runs in the first inning and never looked back in the tournament opener. While the Skyhawk offense tabulated seven hits and five runs, the pitching staff was also strong – tossing 6.2 shutout innings before the game was called because of rain with two outs in the seventh inning.
The senior tandem of Kaci Fuller and Maddi Long each recorded multi-hit efforts in the win. Fuller went 2-for-4 at the plate while adding a double and a home run. Slotted in as the offensive player, Long went 2-for-2 out of the three-hole and laced an RBI-double. Another pair of seniors also came through when their numbers were called as Katie Dreiling and Annie Gutierrez also tallied RBIs in the win.
The pitching staff featured two hurlers in the circle with Brooklynn Linneman picking up her first win of the season after holding the Billikens at bay for 5.2 innings while striking out seven in a scoreless performance. Kiersten Nixon entered the game in relief in the top of the sixth inning with a pair of runners on base before posting a scoreless inning for the Skyhawks.
UT Martin struck early as Fuller put the team on the board immediately with a solo home run to centerfield in the bottom of the first inning. The solo shot was followed up with a single by Avry Blume before moving into scoring position on an infield error. With a runner on second, Long switched bases with her classmate by stroking a double to left field to score the team's second run. Gutierrez then drove in the team's third run of the frame to cap off an impressive scoring opportunity.
The fourth inning proved to lead to more insurance for Skyhawks. Fuller started the rally with an opposite field double before advancing to third on a passed ball. After moving into scoring position, a sacrifice fly by Long drove in her second run of the game. The squad was not done as the next at-bat saw Dreiling single to left field and plate the team's fifth and final run of the game.
The game was called in the top of the seventh inning after a brief rain delay while the team's second contest of the day was canceled. UT Martin is now scheduled to play Western Michigan on Saturday, Feb. 16 with first pitch slated for 11 a.m. Weather could affect the rest of the weekend's schedule, so stay informed by visiting www.UTMSports.com for further updates.
