MARTIN, Tenn. – For the first time in nearly 34 years, the University of Tennessee at Martin men's basketball team travels to North Alabama as the two sides square off in a regional showdown on Monday, Nov. 11. Tipoff from CB&S Bank Arena is set for 6 p.m. on ESPN+.
After the series between these two former Gulf South Conference members went dormant for three decades and change, the Skyhawks and Lions rekindled their rivalry last season. The outcome was an instant classic as UT Martin won by a 105-103 decision in double overtime at the Kathleen and Tom Elam Center. This contest marks the Skyhawks' first visit to Florence since Jan. 7, 1991.
UT Martin enters this contest with a 2-0 record for just the second time in the last 14 seasons as the Skyhawks have knocked off Illinois State (67-64 on Nov. 4) and Kentucky Christian (114-61 on Nov. 7) to begin the Jeremy Shulman Era. UT Martin has displayed a staunch defense early on, limiting its opponents to 33.1 percent (41-for-124) shooting, including a 22.4 percent clip (17-of-76) from three-point range.
Six Skyhawks scored in double figures last time out against Kentucky Christian, headed by 21 points out of Matija Žužić. Josué Grullon accounted for 19 points while Tarence Guinyard (15), AJ Hopkins (12), Afan Trnka (11) and Lamine Niang (10) also helped guide UT Martin, who had 16 makes on a 43.2 percent shooting effort from beyond the three-point arc.
North Alabama is also 2-0 to start the 2024-25 campaign, striking up a 73-57 win at Air Force on Nov. 4 before a 94-58 victory over Point on Nov. 7. Jacari Lane - who registered 19 points, eight assists and three steals against the Skyhawks last season - tops the Lions in scoring at 18.5 points per game on 53.6 percent (15-for-28) shooting. North Alabama has gotten it done defensively so far this season, swiping 23 steals as part of 34 turnovers forced in the first two outings.
