MARTIN, Tenn. – The lone fall home match on the University of Tennessee at Martin's rifle schedule takes place on Saturday, Oct. 19 as the Skyhawks will take on Ohio Valley Conference foe Morehead State at 9 a.m.
UT Martin will hold a match inside the Skyhawk Rifle Range for the first time since Jan. 28 as the squad looks to build off improved scores from each of its first two outings of the 2024-25 campaign. In its Oct. 6 season opener at Murray State, UT Martin managed 4,639 aggregate points after firing scores of 2,306 in smallbore and 2,333 in air rifle. Five days later against Akron in the same range, the Skyhawks posted better scores across the board – piling up 2,317 smallbore and 2,341 air rifle points for a combined tally of 4,658.
Eighth-year head coach MJ Vowell has presided over a deep roster full of talent this season as three separate UT Martin shooters (Joey Kovach, Sadie Palfrey, Alayna Walther) have led the team in smallbore scoring and two Skyhawks (Aubrey Chenoweth, Pelfrey) have topped the squad in air rifle. Walther guided UT Martin in aggregate scoring (1,163 points) at Murray State before Palfrey's 1,180 combined points led the way for the Skyhawks against Akron.
Walther's 582 average ranks as a team-high in smallbore, followed by Palfrey (580), Kovach (577), Liam Tegeler (575), Chenoweth (573), Jeffrey Bourassa (557), Jesse Chamberlain (546) and Rachel Haines (541).
In air rifle, Palfrey's team-best 590 average was boosted by a whopping 596 against Akron – the second-highest score in school history. Chenoweth follows with a 587 average while Walther (581), Kovach (580), Tegeler (577), Bourassa (570), Haines (566) and Chamberlain (562) have accounted for solid averages so far in 2024-25.
