SKYHAWK BASEBALL OPENS FIVE-GAME HOMESTAND AGAINST IN-STATE FOE AUSTIN PEAY TOMORROW NIGHT

MARTIN, Tenn. – Returning to Skyhawk Field for five consecutive games is the University of Tennessee at Martin baseball squad, who begins its lengthy home stretch tomorrow against the Austin Peay Governors. First pitch is set for 6 p.m.
This matchup marks the conclusion of a home-and-home series between the Skyhawks (9-24) and Austin Peay as the two teams just met last Tuesday in Clarksville. In that contest, Hunter McLean (career-best four hits and five RBI's), Andrew Fernandez (career-highs of five RBI's and four runs scored) and Jack Culumovic (four RBI's) guided UT Martin at the plate but the Skyhawks fell 18-17 on a walkoff decision.
Last week, Fernandez was on fire with a .412 batting average (7-of-17) in four games, driving in a team-best six RBI's. Culumovic hit .375 with a pair of round trippers while McLean was responsible for a team-high .579 on-base percentage. Caleb Hobson (team-highs with six runs scored and five stolen bases) and Zac Rice (team-best .857 slugging percentage in three games) also paced UT Martin offensively.
On the mound, the Skyhawks were led by a trio of relievers last week. Campbell Cleveland made two scoreless appearances – including one shutout inning at Austin Peay – while Zach Wager (three innings) and J. Henry Hobson (2.2 frames) each boasted a 0.00 ERA and struck out four batters apiece.
UT Martin is expected to start senior right-hander Jordan Armstrong (1-4, 8.49 ERA) on the hill against the Governors tomorrow. It will mark the team-high ninth start of the spring for the McDonough, Ga. native, who ranks second on the squad in innings pitched (41.1) and strikeouts (31).
Austin Peay is 15-17 heading into a matchup at Belmont this evening. The Governors saw their five-game winning streak snapped on Friday with a road setback at ASUN Conference opponent Kennesaw State in the backend of a doubleheader. During their win streak, Austin Peay averaged 12.0 runs per contest while allowing four runs or fewer in all but one game (last Tuesday's outing against the Skyhawks).
Lyle Miller-Green homered twice and had six RBI's for the Governors against UT Martin last week. Clayton Gray and Conner Gore additionally had four-hit days with the latter providing the game-winning single with two outs in the bottom of the ninth.
Freshman Ashton Smith will likely make his collegiate debut on the mound against UT Martin. The 5-11, 166-pound righty is a Cumming, Ga. native who will be the 15th Austin Peay hurler to make an appearance in 2023 under first-year head coach Roland Fanning.
