MARTIN, Tenn. – A 234-mile trek across the Volunteer State is next in store for the University of Tennessee at Martin men's basketball squad as the Skyhawks collide against Ohio Valley Conference rival Tennessee Tech on Saturday, Feb. 18. Tipoff is set for 3 p.m., following the conclusion of the women's basketball game as part of a doubleheader.
UT Martin (17-11, 9-6 OVC) is coming off back-to-back victories, the last of which came on Thursday in the form of a 90-84 triumph over SIUE. Jordan Sears put on a dazzling scoring display, ending with 30 points to go along with a career-best eight rebounds and team-high three assists. The backcourt duo of Parker Stewart (18 points) and Desmond Williams (season-best 16 points) each made four trifectas apiece to improve the Skyhawks to 14-1 inside the Kathleen and Tom Elam Center.
UT Martin's lone home setback in 2022-23 came at the hands of Tennessee Tech, who won by a narrow 84-80 margin in overtime back on Jan. 7. Playing without Sears, the Skyhawk backcourt trio of KJ Simon (19 points), Stewart (18 points) and Koby Jeffries (career-high 15 points) picked up the offensive slack for UT Martin in a contest that featured 16 ties and four lead changes.
Stewart (17.0 points, 6.0 assists, 5.5 rebounds over two games), Simon (16.3 points, 5.0 rebounds in three outings) and Chris Nix (8.0 points, 8.3 rebounds, 2.7 blocks over three contests) have each performed well in their careers against the Golden Eagles.
This matchup will likely have significant postseason implications as the Skyhawks, Tennessee Tech and Southeast Missouri are all tied for second place in the league standings (trailing Morehead State at 11-4) with three games remaining.
The Golden Eagles (13-15, 9-6 OVC) are coming off a 77-68 home win over Lindenwood on Thursday. Brett Thompson (career-high 28 points, team-best six assists) led the way while Jayvis Harvey - who scored a game-high 23 points against UT Martin earlier this season - pitched in 15 points as Tennessee Tech sank a dozen treys.
