DALLAS, Texas – Five different University of Tennessee at Martin riders generated head-to-head victories today but the No. 1 SMU Mustangs proved to be too much in a 13-5 win in Eastern College Athletic Conference equestrian action.
The No. 9 ranked Skyhawks picked up a pair of wins in fences to go along with two victories in reining and one win in flat. Elizabeth Becker (82 points in fences), Julia Gilman (79 in fences), Sophia Sundem (79 in flat), Aubrey Malone (70 in reining) and Emma Schaefer (68.5 in reining) each collected victories for UT Martin.
Becker came away with her fifth win of the season in fences while Gilman's performance was good enough for her team-best seventh victory. Sydney Hott (82 points) equaled Becker for best score on the team but she fell to her MOP competitor by a slim margin of two points. Haley Kane and Tyler Anderson completed the Skyhawks' fences lineup with 76 and 73 points, respectively.
In reining, Malone's team-best 70 was her second triumph of the season as UT Martin outscored SMU by a 344.5-280.5 margin in the event. Making her season debut in reining was Schaefer, who posted an impressive 68.5 points while her competitor scored a zero. Lexi Bailey collected a tie after she dialed up a score of 68 points while Kate Davis and Logan Putvinski were both awarded 69-point efforts.
The flat portion of the event was decided by the narrowest of scores. Sundem earned her fourth victory of the season while Gilman (team-best 81 points), Hott (79) and Kane (77) each ran into some tough luck with one-point losses. Bridget Vieau posted 76 points but was matched up with the eventual MOP winner.
Keely Seiter's 73 points in horsemanship were good enough for a tie. Schaefer was responsible for a team-high score of 73.5 points but unfortunately fell by two points. Paige Benson (72.5 points) was defeated by two points while Davis' 72 points came up just one point shy of a victory. Bailey's 69.5 points completed the Skyhawk lineup.
UT Martin will collide against this same Mustang squad in its next meet as Senior Day is set for Feb. 11 at the Ned McWherter Agricultural Pavilion.
