MARTIN, Tenn. – Two matches inside Skyhawk Rifle Range are on tap this weekend for the University of Tennessee at Martin, who will play host to UAB on Saturday, Jan. 21 and Memphis on Sunday, Jan. 22. Both matches will begin at 9 a.m.
The Skyhawks kickstarted their brief spring schedule last Saturday at home, falling to Murray State by a 4,716-4,554 margin. Despite the setback, UT Martin was responsible for three career-high scores as Alayna Walther (590) and Victoria Petersen (579) each personal-bests in air rifle while Jeffrey Bourassa's 564 was the highest smallbore score in his blossoming collegiate career.
Against their Ohio Valley Conference rival Murray State, Skyhawk head coach MJ Vowell produced an air rifle scoring lineup of Walther (580 or higher six times in eight tries this season), Nick Fares (season-high 590 against Ole Miss on Oct. 16), Joey Kovach (career-best 585 on Oct. 16 against Ole Miss), Bourassa (career-high 579 at Morehead State on Nov. 6) and Jesse Chamberlain (career-best 579 at the JSU Invitational on Nov. 18). UT Martin's smallbore lineup consisted of Walther (career-high 583 on Nov. 18 at the JSU Invitational), Kovach (career-best 580 at Morehead State on Nov. 6), Fares (career-high 579 on Nov. 6 at Morehead State), Chamberlain (career-best 564 against Jacksonville State on Oct. 22) and Petersen (career-high 568 at Morehead State on Nov. 6).
Walther has now paced the Skyhawks in aggregate scoring three straight times, dating back to both days at the JSU Invitational in the fall finale (Nov. 18-19). The sophomore from Avella, Pa. carries a team-best average in smallbore (576) while Fares' 585 average in air rifle ranks atop the team standings.
This weekend will serve as UT Martin's final tuneup before the Ohio Valley Conference Championship takes place at Skyhawk Rifle Range on Feb. 4-5. Overall, UT Martin has defeated UAB in each of the last three seasons while the Tigers are making their first trip to Skyhawk Rifle Range since January 2013.
