MARTIN, Tenn. – The University of Tennessee at Martin rifle squad will be back in action after nearly a two-month break when it squares off against Murray State on Saturday, Jan. 14.
UT Martin will find itself in the comfort of the Skyhawk Rifle Range for a majority of the spring schedule. Following tomorrow's matchup, UT Martin closes out the regular season at home next weekend (against UAB on Saturday, Jan. 21 and against Memphis on Sunday, Jan. 22). The Skyhawks will then proudly host the 2023 Ohio Valley Conference Championships on Feb. 4-5 before UT Martin travels to Murray State for a NCAA Qualifier on Feb. 18.
The fall portion of the 2022-23 schedule wrapped up on Nov. 18-19 at the JSU Invitational as the Skyhawks accounted for season-high scores in aggregate (4,636) and in smallbore (2,305) on Day 1 of the event held in Jacksonville, Ala. UT Martin also equaled a season-best tally in smallbore (2,305) on Nov. 6 at Morehead State while setting a season-high air rifle score of 2,336 against Jacksonville State on Oct. 22 in Murray, Ky.
A trio of Skyhawks have topped the team in aggregate scoring so far this season, led by sophomore Alayna Walther (four times in seven opportunities). Nick Fares has also guided UT Martin in aggregate scoring twice while freshman Joey Kovach led the way for the Skyhawks on Nov. 5 at Morehead State.
In smallbore, Walther has led UT Martin five times while Kovach paced the squad in back-to-back matchups at Morehead State in early November. The scoring has been evenly distributed so far in air rifle as four different Skyhawks (Fares, Walther, Kovach, Rachel Sprague) have rose to the top of the scoring column – highlighted by five top performances from Fares.
Walther's 576 average leads the way for UT Martin in smallbore as she is followed by Kovach (574), Fares (571), Sprague (567), Jesse Chamberlain (553), Jeffrey Bourassa (550) and Victoria Petersen (550). In air rifle, Fares' season scoring average of 586 points sets the tone for the Skyhawks, followed by Walther (582), Kovach (582), Sprague (576), Chamberlain (571), Bourassa (571) and Petersen (563).
