MARTIN, Tenn. – The first of three straight Ohio Valley Conference road contests for the University of Tennessee at Martin men's basketball team takes place in Nashville as the Skyhawks pay a visit to the Tennessee State Tigers. Tipoff on Thursday, Jan. 12 is set for 8 p.m. (following the conclusion of the women's game as part of a doubleheader).
UT Martin will look for a little deja vu in the Music City as the Skyhawks defeated Tennessee State in the Gentry Center last season, soaring to a 94-78 triumph. In that game, UT Martin buried 12 treys while shooting 54.5 percent from three-point land, committing only five turnovers. KJ Simon (21 points), Chris Nix (12 points) and Josh Endicott (12 points, team-high six rebounds) helped pace the Skyhawks to the victory.
Simon was electric in both of his performances against the Tigers in 2021-22, averaging 21.0 points, 4.5 blocks, 4.0 rebounds, 3.0 assists and 2.5 steals per contest. Nix also averaged 15.0 points on a sizzling 57.9 percent shooting (11-for-19) effort against Tennessee State last season while Parker Stewart (31 points, four rebounds and three assists) excelled in his lone career game against the Tigers on Jan. 9, 2020.
The Skyhawks are coming off a tight 84-80 overtime home setback against Tennessee Tech on Saturday. Simon registered his 1,000th career collegiate point on the way to a team-best 19 points while Stewart (18 points) and Koby Jeffries (career-best 15 points) also led the charge for UT Martin in a game that featured 16 ties and four lead changes.
Tennessee State earned a 60-57 road win at Lindenwood on Saturday, receiving game-highs of 22 points, four assists and four steals out of Jr. Clay. The Tigers held the Lions to 23.1 percent shooting (3-of-13) from three-point range.
Clay has been on fire to open the OVC campaign as the Tennessee Tech transfer tops the league in scoring (17.7 points per game) and assists (4.7 per contest) while chipping in an OVC-best 2.8 steals per outing against league foes.
Tomorrow's game will be streamed live on ESPN+ while Chris Brinkley will broadcast the game live on the local radio airwaves on WCMT 1410 AM/100.5 FM. Those links, in addition to a link to follow along with live stats, can be found above.
