MARTIN, Tenn. – Chronicling the last non-conference date of the 2022 campaign to be held from their own turf, the University of Tennessee at Martin baseball team begins a four-game home stretch on Wednesday evening in a slight non-OVC detour, hosting the Buccaneers of Christian Brothers at Skyhawk Field. First pitch in game #33 on the season is scheduled for 5:00 p.m., streamed live via ESPN+.
Last seen at their home site in an Ohio Valley Conference series with Austin Peay, UTM returns to Martin for the first time against a non-league opponent since a 5-2 victory over Southern Illinois back on March 15th. Since joining the NCAA's Division I ranks in 1993, the Skyhawks have never been bested by the Buccaneers in their own backyard, holding eight wins in as many attempts.
Emerging as the victors in 23 of the program's 29 matchups with Christian Brothers all-time, the navy and orange have captured the W in each of their last seven meetings against the Bucs. Head coach Ryan Jenkins' club has outscored CBU by a combined margin of 28-6 over the teams' last two duels, most recently an 18-2 blowout in 2019 behind then-freshman Seth Petry on the mound, the second of what has become six wins and counting for the junior.
UTM enters tomorrow's affair beside an overall record of 8-24, while the Buccaneers counter with a 10-29 resume of their own. After taking two out of three against 12th-ranked Valdosta State at the D-II level in Gulf South Conference action, the Bucs have dropped their last nine contests, with five of them occurring away from their home site in Memphis, Tenn.
Riding a .231 team batting average through 32 games, the Skyhawks have landed 142 runs altogether next to 242 hits, going yard 22 times on 133 RBI. In Game 3 versus Austin Peay nine days back, UTM produced their second-highest run count in a single outing across a late rally that just fell short at 12-10.
Halfway through the season's OVC schedule with four such series behind them, the Skyhawks will return to league play following Wednesday's bout with CBU, staying at home for a three-game set against Tennessee Tech starting Friday. Before taking on the Golden Eagles, however, UTM will focus firstly on the Buccaneers in the 12th home matchup of the Skyhawks' schedule.
