HARRINGTON, Del. – Following a spectacular regular season where the University of Tennessee at Martin equestrian squad was ranked in the national top-10 in nine different weeks, the Skyhawks turn their attention to the 2022 Eastern College Athletic Conference Championship.
This year's event is set for Thursday, March 24 through Saturday, March 26 at the Delaware State Fairgrounds. The quarterfinals are set for Thursday and the semifinals will take place on Friday. The two semifinal winners then square off for the right to be called ECAC champions on Saturday. All meets will begin at 9 a.m. CST.
No. 1 seed SMU (8-6, 4-1 ECAC) and No. 2 seed UT Martin (7-7, 7-2 ECAC) earned first-round byes and a berth into the league semifinals. The Mustangs will take on the winner of No. 4 seed UC Davis (3-7, 1-3 ECAC) and No. 5 seed South Dakota State (4-7, 1-4 ECAC) while the Skyhawks will clash against the victor of the No. 3 seed Delaware State (6-8, 3-3 ECAC) and No. 6 seed Minnesota-Crookston (0-6, 0-4 ECAC) matchup.
This weekend will mark the second trip to Delaware this season for UT Martin. The Skyhawks fell in a tight 13-7 battle at Delaware State on Oct. 1 before turning away then-No. 3 SMU by a 9-6 margin on Oct. 2 – the first victory over a top-three program in school history.
Second-year head coach Kim Leiter oversees a deep UT Martin roster that has combined for 113 individual victories and 27 MOP's in 2021-22. The Skyhawks have nabbed 68 head-to-head wins and 15 MOP's in the Jumping Seat discipline and tacked on 55 victories plus a dozen more MOP's in the Western discipline.
In fences, Kelby Kane leads the squad in wins (12), MOP's (four) and scoring average (82.1). Overall, seven different UT Martin riders have competed in this event, six of whom have claimed 37 victories with three different representatives combining for eight MOP's.
Julia Gilman (nine victories, three MOP's, 78.8 scoring average) tops the Skyhawks in the flat event. Kane is also responsible for a tie for the team lead with three MOP's. Seven separate UT Martin representatives have joined forces for 31 victories while a trio of Skyhawks have combined for seven MOP's.
UT Martin has shown incredible balance in horsemanship. Keely Seiter (six head-to-head wins), Emma Schaefer (two MOP's), Katelyn Schultz (two MOP's) and Kate Davis (73.0 scoring average) pace the Skyhawks with team leads in their aforementioned statistical categories. All in all, five different riders have contributed victories – four of whom have come away with MOP's.
In reining, Davis and Logan Putvinski share the team lead with six wins apiece while Davis also paces UT Martin with three MOP's and a 69.7 scoring average. Seven separate Skyhawks have registered head-to-head victories and three different riders accumulated MOP performances so far in 2021-22.
