MARTIN, Tenn. – The University of Tennessee at Martin men's basketball team looks to even its season record with a Tuesday, Nov. 15 tilt against the Harris-Stowe Hornets at the Kathleen and Tom Elam Center. Tipoff is scheduled for 6 p.m. live on ESPN+.
A NAIA program out of St. Louis, Mo., Harris-Stowe is a somewhat familiar nonconference opponent for the Skyhawks as this marks the third meeting between the two schools in the last 14 years (also squaring off in 2009 and 2015).
UT Martin (1-2) is coming off its first victory of the 2022-23 campaign, throttling Champion Christian by a 124-65 margin last Saturday. A total of five Skyhawks reached double figures in the scoring column, led by Jalen Myers' 23 points in his Elam Center debut. Chris Nix (22), Parker Stewart (18), KJ Simon (17) and KK Curry (11) also provided big scoring games as UT Martin produced its highest scoring output since Dec. 10, 2017 (a stretch of 138 games). The Skyhawks also established a school record with 52 made field goals, breaking the two previous marks of 51 set in 1982 and 1973.
Through one week of the college basketball season, the Skyhawks rank atop the Ohio Valley Conference in scoring offense (84.7 points per game), rebounding (45.7 per contest), assists (18.0 per outing) and assist-to-turnover ratio (1.3).
The Hornets (0-4) are coming off a low-scoring affair on Saturday, falling to undefeated NAIA squad Philander Smith by a 56-40 margin. Alex Nunnally almost came away with a double-double (13 points, nine rebounds) as Harris-Stowe led by one point at the halftime break but the Hornets ultimately could not overcome 27 turnovers.
Last Monday, Harris-Stowe traveled to fellow OVC member SIUE and fell by an 85-57 margin in exhibition play. Nunnally (12 points) and Jamarric Hammond (11 points) led the Hornets with double-digit scoring efforts.
Chris Brinkley (play-by-play) and Eddie Suiter (color) will provide commentary live on ESPN+ and on WCMT Radio 1410 AM/100.5 FM. Those links - as well as a link for live stats - can be found above.
