MARTIN, Tenn. – The University of Tennessee at Martin men's basketball squad makes the short 50-mile trek to the CFSB Center on Saturday, Jan. 22 for a matchup against Ohio Valley Conference leader Murray State. Tipoff time is scheduled for 7 p.m.
The Skyhawks are one of just four OVC teams to rack up multiple road wins so far in conference play as UT Martin owns away victories at Austin Peay (65-62 on Jan. 30) and at Tennessee State (94-78 on Jan. 6). In league play, the Skyhawks sit atop the OVC in turnover margin (+2.5), forcing the opposition into at least 14 turnovers in five of their six contests against conference foes.
UT Martin (6-12, 2-4 OVC) is coming off a tough 72-57 home setback against Austin Peay on Thursday. The Skyhawks trailed by just five points at the halftime break but could not overcome a season-low 33.3 percent (20-of-60) shooting effort. Koby Jeffries tied a career-high with 14 points to go along with team-highs of four assists and two steals while Josh Endicott managed a season-best 13 points with a game-high eight rebounds.
Receiving votes in the Coaches Poll last week is Murray State (16-2, 6-0 OVC), who has not lost a game since falling 71-58 at current No. 2 Auburn on Dec. 22. The Racers rank in the top-10 nationally in winning percentage (.889, fourth), scoring margin (+19.9, fourth), scoring offense (83.1 points per game, sixth), field goal percentage (.498, 10th), rebounding margin (+8.7, 10th).
Preseason All-OVC honorees Tevin Brown and KJ Williams have performed well against UT Martin in their careers. Brown, the OVC leader in scoring, has averaged 20.0 points, 5.5 rebounds and 4.0 assists while shooting an even 50 percent (26-of-52) from three-point land in six games against the Skyhawks. Williams has averaged 14.5 points (on 57.5 percent shooting) and 11.3 rebounds over his last four outings against UT Martin.
