BRENTWOOD, Tenn. – The University of Tennessee at Martin soccer team has officially clinched a three-peat of weekly awards from the Ohio Valley Conference, as league officials announced Tuesday afternoon that graduate midfielder Bella Roberts was unanimously selected as the OVC Offensive Player of the Week.
With six matches gone on the 2021 schedule, the Skyhawks (4-1-1) have gone all three weeks with one player being highlighted by the OVC's weekly honors pool, as Roberts takes the cake this time after her three-goal performance in 92 minutes off the bench versus North Alabama and Wright State.
Locating the back of the net thrice in only five attempts across a 72-hour window, Roberts has been an instrumental figure in UTM's mid-season offensive toolbox, landing a pair of strikes against UNA last Thursday only two minutes and six seconds apart from one another. The fifth-year veteran did even more damage in Sunday's 4-1 triumph over WSU with her 13th career goal in the 44th minute, aiding the Skyhawks to their third victory in a row near the end of a highly-accomplished non-conference slate.
A native of Murfreesboro, Tenn., Roberts has hoisted her career point total up to 34 now that the dust has settled on the team's 8-2 combined difference on the scoreboard last week, reaching a shot percentage of 0.429 in seven total tries alongside a 0.571 mark when producing a shot-on-goal.
As the Skyhawks' chemistry continues to resonate during their white-hot offensive stretch, UTM sits undefeated when playing on their home turf at 3-0 after dismantling the Lions and Raiders, awaiting a third consecutive battle in their own backyard this Sunday against Western Carolina.
Not only is the offense producing gaudy statistics for head coach Phil McNamara's club, but the team's defensive array has matched that level of efficiency to the tune of just four goals given up in six appearances (the lowest number of all nine schools throughout the Ohio Valley Conference).
Off the back of consecutive shutouts opposite Southern Illinois and Little Rock, Roberts' classmate Erica Myers landed the attention from the OVC by being named the league's Goalkeeper of the Week. Seven days later, senior Jill Hildreth made the team two-for-two in conference award recognition by gaining the same accolade as Roberts on Tuesday. Bella's Offensive Player of the Week nab grants the Skyhawks even more momentum on a squad that is already rolling into the early matches of September.
Outshooting the other side by a wide margin of 75-38 leading to 12 goals in all, UTM returns home to meet the Catamounts at the tail end of the weekend at 1:00 p.m. Sunday's meeting with the Southern Conference representative will be streamed live via ESPN+.
