MARTIN, Tenn. – The University of Tennessee at Martin softball team dropped its midweek matchup to in-state foe Memphis 6-2 in a non-conference bout on Tuesday afternoon at Bettye Giles Field.
The Skyhawks (19-10) dropped their third straight decision after allowing 15 base hits on the day while most of the Tigers damage was done via singles with just two extra base hits in the contest. UT Martin scratched out seven hits of its own while Aalia Bivens and Maddi Long each led the team with two hits each while Paige Clark, Kaci Fuller and Skyler Davis also tallied base knocks.
Seeley Layne (1-2) was hit with the loss in her third start of the season after scattering nine hits and three runs over 4.1 innings of work. Hannah Ridolfi appeared in relief where she allowed three earned runs in short work. Freshman Emily Brown was the third pitcher used and was impressive in her third appearance of the season, allowing just one hit in two scoreless innings of relief.
Memphis (7-24) jumped out to an early lead in the top of the first inning after a leadoff single by Gracie Morton before later coming around to score on a double into the right center gap by Alyssa Dean to put the Tigers on the board.
UT Martin found the game's equalizer in the bottom half of the inning as Bivens reach base for the first of three times on the afternoon by drawing a one-out walk before moving to third on a single through the left side by Long. With runners on the corners and two outs, a defensive miscue by the Tigers resulted in the Skyhawks first run crossing home plate to tie the contest at 1-1.
The game would remain tied until the top of the fifth inning when Memphis blew the contest open with five runs. The Tigers tallied five base hits in the inning while finding loading the bases and keeping them juiced before getting RBIs from Kendall Lee, Meagan Chism, Sara Ann Davidson and Delaney Smith to bust the game open and take a 6-1 advantage.
The Skyhawks had their big scoring chance in the bottom of the sixth inning. The inning would lead off with Shyanne Sheffield reaching base via an error for the second time in the contest before a single by Davis and a two-out walk by pinch hitter Gracie Lusk loaded the bases. With the bases juiced, Clark tallied the Skyhawks lone RBI of the afternoon with an infield single to the shortstop to score Sheffield to cut the margin to 6-2 but the scoring chance would end there following an infield pop out.
UT Martin tallied two more hits in the seventh innings on a double in the gap by Long followed by a screamer of the bat of Fuller but the squad could not put across a run in the frame, sealing the team's decision.
The Skyhawks will return to action this weekend with a trip to Ohio Valley Conference foe Eastern Illinois for a three-game series beginning on Friday, Apr. 9.
