MARTIN, Tenn. – The University of Tennessee at Martin baseball team hosts its third Ohio Valley Conference weekend opponent of the season when it squares off against the Jacksonville State Gamecocks for a three-game series. The opener is scheduled for 5 p.m. on Friday, April 30 before a 1 p.m. doubleheader takes place on Saturday, May 1.
The Skyhawks (15-20, 7-8 OVC) have relied on high quality pitching during a current stretch where they have won four of their last five games. During that span, UT Martin's hurlers have produced a microscopic 2.25 ERA and a .215 opponent batting average. Winston Cannon is 2-0 while David Hussey has logged three saves to pace the Skyhawks over the last five outings.
Cannon will get the starting nod for UT Martin on Friday as the senior right-hander ranks in the top-10 in the OVC in wins (6, second), innings pitched (58.0, third), ERA (3.57, fifth), strikeouts (56, fifth) and opponent batting average (.252, ninth). Sam Folks (2-4, 5.02 ERA) is projected to start Game 1 of Saturday's doubleheader as the senior lefty ranks third in the OVC with 18 called strikeouts and eighth in total strikeouts (51). Junior right-hander Nick Wohlbold is the probable starting pitcher for the series finale as he is 3-2 on the season with a 4.04 ERA that ranks ninth in the OVC.
In conference play, Ethan Whitley has been on a torrid stretch at the dish. The junior first baseman is hitting .350 (21-for-60) and ranks fourth in the league in home runs (six) plus slugging percentage (.700) against league arms. Wil LaFollette has mashed six of his team-best 10 homers against OVC opposition while Blake Daniels is tied with Whitley and LaFollette for the team lead in RBI's (13) during league play.
Blake Davis has found success against the Gamecocks in his career as the junior catcher from Crandall, Ga. hit .583 (7-of-12) with an .833 slugging percentage during the 2019 series between these two squads. Folks is also 1-0 with a 2.45 ERA in two career starts against Jacksonville State.
The Gamecocks (19-21, 9-9 OVC) lead the OVC in both batting average (.284) and ERA (4.40). Alex Carignan's .361 batting average leads four Jacksonville State regulars who hit above .300 while Alex Webb accounts for team-highs of six home runs and 38 RBI's.
