
SKYHAWK BEACH VOLLEYBALL COLLECTS THIRD OVC WIN OF YOUNG 2021 SEASON ON FINAL DAY OF JACKSONVILLE STATE TOURNEY

ANNISTON, Ala. – For the second straight day, the University of Tennessee at Martin beach volleyball squad came away with an Ohio Valley Conference victory at the weekend tournament hosted by Jacksonville State. The Skyhawks defeated Eastern Kentucky by a 4-1 margin this morning before falling 4-1 to Chattanooga this afternoon.
The UT Martin team of Haeleigh Paulino and Logan Wallick went undefeated on the day out of the No. 3 position, extending their season record to a perfect 6-0. The Skyhawks (4-2, 3-2 OVC) additionally earned wins today at the No. 1 slot behind Lucy Kaufman/Hannah Phillips, at No. 2 with Kayla Carrell/Karen Scanlon and at No. 4 behind Addison Conley/Jessica Reynolds.
Against Eastern Kentucky, UT Martin won the first and last three matchups. Conley and Reynolds got things started at No. 4 with a 21-10, 21-18 victory. The Skyhawks' No. 5 tandem of Baillie Kearns and Lauren O'Neill were in a tight battle but fell 22-20, 21-16 as the match was even at 1-all.
UT Martin followed by sweeping the remaining three head-to-head matchups. Carrell and Scanlon breezed for a victory at No. 2 by a 21-11, 21-9 margin while Kaufman and Phillips' 21-19, 21-9 triumph officially sealed the win. Paulino and Wallick (21-13, 18-21, 15-10) put the exclamation point on the win after outlasting their opposition at No. 3.
The Skyhawks could not find as much success against the Mocs as UT Martin managed one victory while two of the four setbacks were results of third-set tiebreakers. Paulino and Wallick came away with a 21-19, 21-17 victory at No. 3 to keep their perfect season alive.
Kaufman and Phillips got off to a good start at No. 1 but were defeated 16-21, 21-14, 15-13. Another tiebreaking decision went Chattanooga's way as Conley and Reynolds fell 21-17, 13-21, 15-8 at No. 4.
Also representing the Skyhawks this afternoon was Carrell/Scanlon at No. 2 (lost 21-16, 21-15) and Kearns/O'Neill at No. 5 (lost 21-11, 22-20).
Week 2 of the 2021 beach volleyball season begins on Wednesday, April 21 as UT Martin plays host to Austin Peay in a double dual. Match times are set for 2 p.m. and 4 p.m. at the Skyhawk Beach Volleyball Complex.
