MARTIN, Tenn. – After a four-month layoff from its final rodeo of the fall, the University of Tennessee at Martin gets back in action this Thursday, March 18 through Saturday, March 20 at East Mississippi Community College.
This marks the first of five regular season rodeos scheduled for the spring semester, as the Skyhawks will travel to Pearl River Community College on March 25-27, go to Arkansas-Monticello on April 1-3, host the 53rd annual UT Martin Spring College Rodeo (April 15-17) and travel to Northwest Mississippi Community College on April 22-24. The 73rd annual College National Finals Rodeo is set for June 13-19 in Casper, Wyo.
The UT Martin men's team finished in second place during all five fall rodeos while the women's squad posted a pair of top-four finishes. On the men's side, UT Martin ranks seventh nationally in points (2,600) while the Skyhawk women's team has accrued 475 points this season – which ranks sixth in the Ozark Region.
A total of nine different UT Martin cowboys rank amongst the nation's best in their respective events. Chase Thrasher (header) and Cole Walker (heeler) rank third in team roping with 465 points. Walker's 770 points rank sixth in men's all-around and Robbie Van Holten (410 points) ranks 17th in the same category. Jesse Keysaer (380 points in steer wrestling) and Stetson Bierman (520 points in bareback riding) rank eighth and ninth, respectively. Walker (265 points) ranks 15th in tie down roping while Cole Harmon (260 points, 24th in steer wrestling) and Justin Sailors (235 points, 25th in team roping header) have also gotten off to great starts this season.
Kailey Schmidt represents the UT Martin women's team in the national rankings as her 265 points in goat tying is good enough for 24th place. She is one of three UT Martin cowgirls who are ranked in the Ozark Region's top-15 in that event, joining Grace Bryant (110 points) and Lauren Heck (105 points). The duo of Shayne Mallory (110 points) and Madison McFall (70 points) both rank in the top-12 in barrel racing in the Ozark Region while Brianna Pugh owns a team-best 110 points in breakaway roping, which ranks 12th in the Ozark Region.
