SKYHAWK BASEBALL MUSCLES UP FOR 9-6 VICTORY OVER BELMONT IN OVC OPENER; TOMORROW’S DOUBLEHEADER START TIME PUSHED UP

MARTIN, Tenn. – The University of Tennessee at Martin baseball team started its Ohio Valley Conference and home schedule with a jolt of offense tonight, launching four home runs in a 9-6 triumph over Belmont at Skyhawk Field.
Casey Harford, Blake Daniels, Christian Hall and Ethan Whitley each crushed round trippers – all in the span of three innings – to boost UT Martin, who improves to 5-6 overall after the victory over the OVC preseason favorite.
Harford finished 2-for-3 with three RBI's and two runs scored as each Skyhawk starter reached base safely at least once. Whitley (two hits) and Sean Dixson (three walks) joined Harford on base for a majority of the each while Hall and Daniels each accounted for multi-RBI performances.
On the mound, Winston Cannon was zoned in from the start. The senior from Cookeville, Tenn. evened his season record to 2-2 while collecting his 14th career victory, moving into a tie for seventh place all-time in that category. He held the Bruins scoreless through four innings, pitching into the sixth before ending his night with a final stat line that included two runs allowed and seven strikeouts over five innings.
Nick Wohlbold locked down a four-out save (the 16th of his career) while David Hussey (two innings) and Eli Martin (0.2 frames) also made appearances out of the UT Martin bullpen.

Belmont (3-6, 0-1 OVC) threatened in the top of the first but Cannon stranded the bases loaded. The Skyhawks wasted no time getting on the scoreboard, as a leadoff walk by Dixson was followed by a Will Smith single and a Harford RBI groundout to make the score 1-0.
Cannon dialed up a pair of strikeouts in the second inning and the UT Martin offense provided another insurance run in the bottom half. Wil LaFollette ripped a double off the wall in right field and came around to score seven pitches later when Davis lined an opposite-field RBI single just inside the first base bag.
The Bruins could not solve Cannon in the third or fourth innings, not getting a runner past first base in either frame. The Skyhawk righty nearly came out of the fifth inning unscathed but a two-out bloop single brought in two runs before he buckled down to strand the bases loaded again, keeping the score at 2-all.
UT Martin reclaimed the lead in the bottom of the fifth. Smith was issued a free pass and Harford jumped on a 1-0 offering for a high, towering homer that snuck just inside the left field foul pole. It was the second jack of the 2021 campaign for the shortstop out of Cordova, Tenn.
Hussey relieved Cannon in the sixth and came in firing strikes, recording all three outs via whiffs after the Bruins put the tying run at the plate.
The Skyhawks padded their lead out to 6-2 in the bottom of the sixth. Davis drew a one-out walk and following a pitching change that featured a lefty-on-lefty matchup, Daniels won the battle with a homer that cleared the right field wall.
After Belmont trimmed its deficit to 6-3 in the top of the seventh, UT Martin once again erupted in the bottom half. Harford started things with a single and came around to score on a monstrous blast off the bat of Hall for his OVC-leading fourth homer of the season. Whitley then joined in the home run party, smacking a homer off the light pole in centerfield to make the score 9-3.
In the eighth, the Bruins scored three runs and brought the tying run to the dish with two away but Wohlbold induced the final out of the inning. Belmont couldn't find any luck against Wohlbold in the ninth, as the Skyhawks' all-time saves leader needed just eight pitches to retire the Bruins in order.
The doubleheader scheduled for tomorrow between these two sides has been pushed up to 11 a.m. to avoid inclement weather forecasted for the area.
