MARTIN, Tenn. – For the second time this season, the University of Tennessee at Martin women's basketball team used a balanced scoring approach, placing four players in double figures to cruise past Ohio Valley Conference foe Eastern Illinois 70-50 on Thursday evening.
The Skyhawks (9-3, 8-1 OVC) pushed their season-long winning streak to seven games after a sluggish start to the contest. After going scoreless for the first five minutes of the contest, UT Martin awoke from its slumber and went on a scoring rampage with a 22-2 run over the following 12 minutes of play. From there the Skyhawks would add to their margin before pulling away to lead by as much as 22 points.
With the win, UT Martin built upon its dominant home court advantage against OVC opponents. Dating back to the 2018-19 season, the Skyhawks have won 16 straight against league competitors in the Elam Center while improving to 86-11 since 2010.
UT Martin shot 50.0 percent from the floor to power a strong offense which scored 70 points on the night. The Skyhawks used its defense to key its offensive attack, forcing 20 turnovers on 10 steals while scoring 23 points off turnovers. The team's stingy defense also saw the squad hold its opponent under 40 percent from the field for the seventh consecutive game.
Chelsey Perry paced the Skyhawks with 19 points, six rebounds and five assists but saw her streak of consecutive games with 20 points end at 11. Dasia Young sat second on the team with 16 points while tallying four rebounds and three assists while Paige Pipkin scored 11 points along with six rebounds and three assists. Maddie Waldrop rounded out the Skyhawks in double figures with 10 points.

"This is a strange year and this was a strange game," UT Martin head coach Kevin McMillan said. "There was no scoring in the first quarter at all but we still put up 70 which is something you like. I don't really understand it because we played well in the second and fourth quarters when you would think we would be tired. I thought our defense was really, really good in the first half and pitiful in the second half but EIU plays really hard. We just have to figure out a way to sustain our energy and effort. I am hard on our girls because I think we just have that next level to get to and we have a long way to go but not a lot of time to get there."
Eastern Illinois (7-9, 5-6 OVC) struggled to find its offensive stroke until the third quarter when it shot 56.3 percent from the floor and scored 21 points during the period. Despite the strong quarter, it was too little too late as the visitors still managed to shoot just 38.5 percent for the contest.
The Panthers placed one player in double figures on the night as Abby Wahl paced the team with 21 points and seven rebounds. Wahl played a big part in the Panthers surge in the third by scoring 13 of her game-high 21 points in the period.
UT Martin will return to action on Saturday, Jan. 30 with a matchup against OVC foe SIUE. Tipoff from the Elam Center is scheduled for 1 p.m.
