MARTIN, Tenn. – Through the end of the 2019-20 academic year, we will be posting a season recap for each University of Tennessee at Martin athletic program. This edition of the "Skyhawk Season in Review" series features the softball team.
The Skyhawks looked to make waves during the 2020 season after Brian Dunn was named the fourth head coach in program history while boasting a relatively young roster which featured just two seniors in Aalia Bivens and Hannah Ridolfi along with four juniors while the rest of the squad was comprised of 14 underclassmen.
While UT Martin got off on the right foot, the season came to a sudden standstill just prior to Ohio Valley Conference play as the COVID-19 pandemic canceled the remainder of the season on March 12. The Skyhawks 2020 season will be quickly summarized in the record book by an asterisk next to its 12-10 record.
The Skyhawks faced a difficult schedule in the 22 of 55 schedule games played. UT Martin took nationally ranked Tennessee to the brink before suffering a walk-off defeat on the road while also squaring off against Mississippi State and North Texas which both spent some part of the season ranked or receiving votes in the national polls.
Sophomore Chelsey Gore paced the team with a .403 batting average on the season while tallying two doubles, two triples and six RBIs. Newcomer Kaitlyn Kelley led the team with nine extra base hits (seven doubles and two home runs) while also tallying 10 RBIs. The pitching staff equally as impressive with all three hurlers – Erin Gallagher, Hannah Ridolfi and Seeley Layne – posting a sub-three ERA while limiting opponents to a .223 batting average in 150 innings of work.
