UT MARTIN MEN'S HOOPS HOSTS JACKSONVILLE STATE IN A REMATCH OF 2019 OVC QUARTERFINALS

MARTIN, Tenn. – Coming off one of its best efforts of the season, the University of Tennessee at Martin men's basketball squad looks to carry that momentum into a Saturday, Feb. 8 tilt against Jacksonville State. Tipoff from the Kathleen and Tom Elam Center is set for approximately 4 p.m., following the women's basketball game as the backend of an Ohio Valley Conference doubleheader.
Saturday serves as "Alumni Day" at UT Martin. In conjunction with that event, Skyhawk all-time great Jared Newson (2003-06) will have his No. 1 jersey retired, in addition to women's basketball standouts Heather Butler (No. 11 from 2010-14) and Jasmine Newsome (No. 12 from 2010-14). Newson was a two-time All-OVC performer who graduated from UT Martin as the program's third all-time leading scorer (1,347 points) despite playing just three seasons.
On Thursday, the Skyhawks (7-15, 3-8 OVC) clamped down defensively in a 74-62 victory over Tennessee Tech. UT Martin limited the visiting Golden Eagles to 62 points, a 39.1 field goal percentage and 25.7 percent shooting from three-point range - all of which rank as defensive season-bests against a Skyhawk Division I opponent. As a direct result, UT Martin led by as many as 31 points and led for 39:42 of clock time.
The senior duo of Quintin Dove (game-high 19 points) and Derek Hawthorne, Jr. (16 points) provided ample scoring punch in the win over Tennessee Tech. Parker Stewart, who is the OVC scoring leader in conference play with 22.1 points per outing, came up just shy of a triple-double (16 points, eight rebounds, career-best eight assists).
The Skyhawks split their two matchups against the Gamecocks last season, winning 66-64 at the Elam Center during the regular season before falling 88-81 in the OVC Championship quarterfinals. Dove was a thorn in Jacksonville State's side in those two games, averaging 28.0 points on a sizzling 72.4 percent shooting (21-of-29, including a perfect 5-for-5 effort from beyond the three-point arc). That includes Dove's career-best 35 points that stands as one of the best OVC Tournament performances in school history.
The Gamecocks (9-15, 4-7 OVC) are looking to end a three-game skid as they fell 76-72 at Southeast Missouri on Thursday. Kayne Henry tallied 15 points and eight rebounds to lead four Gamecocks in double-digits scoring but the comeback attempt fell just short for Jacksonville State, who tops the OVC in three-point field goal percentage defense (.312).
This game will stream live on ESPN+ while Chris Brinkley (play-by-play) and Tom Britt (color) will provide radio analysis locally on WCMT 1410 AM/100.5 FM. Those links, as well as a link to follow along with live stats, can be found at the top of the webpage.
