MARTIN, Tenn. – The University of Tennessee at Martin men's basketball squad goes for its third consecutive victory in the all-time series against Tennessee Tech when the two Ohio Valley Conference rivals square off on Thursday, Feb. 20. Tipoff from the Hooper Eblen Center is scheduled for 7:30 p.m.
Dating back to the start of the 2015-16 campaign, the Skyhawks (8-17, 4-10 OVC) have won five of the last six matchups against the Golden Eagles. That includes a pair of wins in Cookeville (2015, 2017) as well as a 74-62 home win earlier this month.
In UT Martin's victory over Tennessee Tech on Feb. 6, the Skyhawks led by as many as 31 points and limited the Golden Eagles to 62 points on 39.1 percent shooting (25-of-64). That still stands as UT Martin's best defensive performance against a Division I opponent this season.
Skyhawk senior Quintin Dove took over the scoring lead in OVC play last weekend, as he pumps in 21.8 points per contest against league foes. On Monday, the forward out of Cleveland, Ohio was named the OVC Player of the Week for the second time this season.
UT Martin is coming off an exhilarating 80-79 overtime triumph over Eastern Illinois last Saturday. Derek Hawthorne, Jr. (18 points, nine rebounds, career-best five assists) rose up from 25 feet for the game-winning three-pointer just before time expired for the go-ahead bucket. Dove (32 points, 10 rebounds) and Eman Sertovic (career-high 14 points) also paced the Skyhawks offensively.
Tennessee Tech (7-20, 4-10) is coming off a split last week, defeating Jacksonville State 75-74 at home on Thursday before falling 70-55 at Tennessee State on Saturday. Sophomore guard Jr. Clay led the Golden Eagles with averages of 14.5 points, 4.5 rebounds and 3.5 assists in those two games. Cade Crosland went off for a career-high 21 points (on seven 3-pointers) in the victory over Jacksonville State while Clay garnered team-highs of 16 points and nine rebounds against Tennessee State.
