MARTIN, Tenn. – A lengthy University of Tennessee at Martin homestand opens on Thursday, Jan. 9 against the Tennessee State Tigers in an Ohio Valley Conference men's basketball showdown at the Kathleen and Tom Elam Center. Tipoff time is set for approximately 7:30 p.m., following the women's basketball game as the backend of a doubleheader.
The Skyhawks (4-9, 0-2 OVC) will look to take advantage of four consecutive home outings over the next two weeks to move up the league standings, as UT Martin boasts a 12-5 home record since the start of the 2018-19 campaign. The Skyhawks have won each of the last four home matchups against Tennessee State, having not lost to the Tigers in the Elam Center since Jan. 26, 2012.
UT Martin is coming off a tough OVC-opening road trip, falling to traditional league heavyweights Murray State (89-76) and Austin Peay (82-63). The Skyhawk duo of Parker Stewart and Quintin Dove each averaged 22.0 points per game last week. Stewart tossed in a career-best 33 points at Murray State and followed that with a career-high seven assists at Austin Peay. Dove went off for 30 points and 12 rebounds at Austin Peay, sinking 12 of his 13 shot attempts on the way to collecting his sixth double-double of his two-year UT Martin career.
Eman Sertovic (11.0 points per game) and Derek Hawthorne, Jr. (10.0) also averaged double figures in the scoring column for the Skyhawks last week.
The Tigers (10-5, 2-0 OVC) own a league-high 10 overall victories and are one of four OVC squads to begin the conference season with a perfect 2-0 mark after home wins over Eastern Illinois (84-79) and SIUE (79-74). Second-year head coach Brian "Penny" Collins has engineered a quick turnaround for Tennessee State, who has already passed last season's win total (nine).
Michael Littlejohn pumped in a team-high 16.5 points per game behind a sizzling .714 three-point field goal percentage (10-of-14) last week for the Tigers, who pace the OVC with a .486 team field goal percentage.
