MARTIN, Tenn. – The University of Tennessee at Martin men's basketball squad concludes its Ohio Valley Conference opening week with a short 95-mile drive to in-state foe Austin Peay on Saturday, Jan. 4. Tipoff time in Clarksville is set for 4 p.m.
These two programs have been evenly matched since the start of the 2015-16 season as the Skyhawks hold a narrow 6-5 advantage in the win column over that period. To further illustrate that point, UT Martin has outscored the Governors by a slim 822-818 margin in the aforementioned 11 games of the series.
The Skyhawks (4-8, 0-1 OVC) are coming off an 89-76 road loss at Murray State on Thursday. In that game, UT Martin sliced an 18-point first-half deficit down to six with 11 minutes to play but the Racers held on for the win. It marked the first time that the Skyhawks failed to win this season when scoring at least 76 points (was previously 4-0).
Parker Stewart piled up a career-best 33 points against Murray State, which are the most points scored by any UT Martin player in an OVC opener. It also marks the highest scoring OVC debut for any player since Tennessee State freshman Bruce Price scored 38 points against Jacksonville State on Jan. 8, 2004.
Austin Peay (7-7, 1-0 OVC) defeated Southeast Missouri by a 78-63 margin in its league opener on Thursday, improving to a 6-0 inside the Dunn Center in 2019-20.
Preseason OVC Player of the Year Terry Taylor leads the conference in both scoring (23.0 points per game) and rebounding (9.0 per game). The junior swingman, who averaged 22.5 points and 10.5 rebounds against the Skyhawks last season, tallied his 29th career double-double against Southeast Missouri.
The Governors also boast the freshman duo of Jordyn Adams (seventh in the OVC with 15.8 points per game) and Carlos Paez (OVC leader with a .917 free throw percentage and 3.0 assist-to-turnover ratio).
ESPN+ will provide a live video stream of the game while Chris Brinkley (play-by-play) and Tom Britt (color) will handle radio broadcasting duties locally on WCMT 1410 AM/100.5 FM. Those links, as well as a link for live stats, can be found at the top of the webpage.
