MARTIN, Tenn. – A stretch of four consecutive Ohio Valley Conference road games for the University of Tennessee at Martin men's basketball team begins on Thursday, Jan. 23 with a trip to Eastern Illinois as the two squads duel it out at Lantz Arena. Tipoff is set for 7:30 p.m.
This game serves as a rematch from the first round of last season's OVC Championship tournament as the Skyhawks came away with a 78-71 victory. Derek Hawthorne, Jr. piled up a team-high 17 points while Quintin Dove chipped in 10 points in that game, which was the third single-digit decision between UT Martin and the Panthers during the 2018-19 season (Eastern Illinois won 92-87 in overtime in Charleston and 66-64 in Martin).
Hawthorne has been one of the Skyhawks' most reliable scorers lately, as the senior guard is averaging 20.7 points over the last three games. That includes a career-best 25 points (on 10-of-15 shooting) last time out against Austin Peay.
The Skyhawks (5-12, 1-5 OVC) currently top the OVC with a .731 free throw percentage, which has been a key factor in an explosive offense that features three of the league's best scorers. Parker Stewart (19.6 points per game, second), Dove (17.7, fifth) and Hawthorne (14.1, ninth) provide UT Martin with a potent scoring punch.
Boasting a perfect 5-0 mark at home this season are the Panthers (9-9, 2-4 OVC) who are coming off a sweep of Jacksonville State (70-69) and Tennessee Tech (84-59) last week. With the exception of a 32-point road setback against Belmont and the aforementioned 25-point triumph over Tennessee Tech, the rest of Eastern Illinois' OVC results have been by five points or less.
Mack Smith, who ranks third all-time in NCAA history with 67 consecutive games with a three-pointer, paces the Panthers with 12.7 points per game. Preseason All-OVC honoree Josiah Wallace (23.3 points per game against the Skyhawks last season) is responsible for 18.8 points per outing against league opposition.
The contest will be streamed live on ESPN+ while Chris Brinkley (play-by-play) and Alex Boggis (color) will have the radio call locally on WCMT 1410 AM/100.5 FM. Those links, as well as a link for live stats, can be found at the top of the webpage.
