MARTIN, Tenn. – For the second time in three days, the University of Tennessee at Martin men's basketball squad will look to knock off an Ohio Valley Conference leader as the Skyhawks clash with Austin Peay on Saturday, Jan. 18. Tipoff time from the Kathleen and Tom Elam Center is set for approximately 4 p.m. (following the completion of the women's basketball game).
Since 2013, each of the seven games between these two in-state rivals at the Elam Center have been decided by single digits. In fact, these teams have combined for a score of 203-203 over the last three such contests.
UT Martin (5-11, 1-4 OVC) is coming off an 84-62 loss at the hands of Murray State on Thursday. Quintin Dove scored 18 points to lead four Skyhawks in double figures scoring but UT Martin couldn't overcome a 35.7 percent (20-of-56) shooting performance. Derek Hawthorne, Jr. (15 points), Parker Stewart (15) and Steve Wooten, Jr. (12) also had notable offensive outings.
This is already the second time the Skyhawks have faced the Governors this season, as Austin Peay claimed an 82-63 win in Clarksville on Jan. 4. In that game, Dove went off for 30 points and 12 rebounds, sinking 12 of his 13 shot attempts. That stands as the highest single-game field goal percentage (.923) for any UT Martin player who made at least 10 field goals in the school's Division I Era.
The Governors (11-7, 5-0 OVC) lead the OVC in offensive rebounding (11.9 per game) and rank as the top defensive team so far in league play with just 62.8 points allowed per game. Austin Peay has won each of its first five conference games by an average of 15.2 points - including an 84-59 triumph at Southeast Missouri on Thursday.
Terry Taylor leads the league in scoring (23.3 points per game) and rebounding (9.3 per contest). In five career games against the Skyhawks, the OVC's Preseason Player of the Year has averaged 20.0 points and 8.6 rebounds per outing, shooting 64.1 percent (41-of-64) from the floor. He generated 32 points and 12 rebounds against UT Martin back on Jan. 4.
This game will be streamed live on ESPN+ while the radio broadcast can be heard locally on WCMT 1410 AM/100.5 FM. Those links, plus a link for live stats, are located at the top of the webpage.
