MARTIN, Tenn. – The 2019-20 University of Tennessee at Martin rifle season officially gets underway this weekend as the Skyhawks make the short drive to Memphis to take part in the annual Tiger Open on Saturday, Sept. 21.
Head coach MJ Vowell enters her third season as head coach at her alma mater, as she will turn to an experienced UT Martin roster in 2019-20. Although the roster only lists two seniors, 10 of the 11 Skyhawks are returners from last season's squad.
Seven of UT Martin's 10 returners have earned All-Ohio Valley Conference status during their tenure, combining for 17 total awards. Senior Kaitlin Korinek headlines that list, as she has notched seven total All-OVC awards in her storied career. The Irwin, Pa. native has nabbed a three air rifle and three smallbore postseason awards as well as the 2017 OVC Freshman of the Year accolade.
Last season, Rachel Sprague became only the sixth Skyhawk to be crowned as the OVC Freshman of the Year, as she tacked on All-OVC air rifle second team and smallbore All-Newcomer honors to her resume.
Celia Gelpey and Kalen Royal also each accumulated OVC All-Newcomer accolades in both air rifle and smallbore two seasons ago. In addition, Abigail Donald (2019 All-Newcomer in air rifle), Jacob Osborne (2018 All-Newcomer in air rifle) and Jennifer Plocinik (2017 All-Newcomer in smallbore) lay claim to All-OVC awards in their careers.
Senior Amanda Mayo provides extensive experience for UT Martin while the duo of Tristan Grisham and Rachel Mills will look to build off positive freshman seasons.
The lone newcomer to UT Martin's squad is freshman Nick Fares, who earned Second Place Junior with 1057-15X at the Ohio State Smallbore Championships in 2018.
This weekend is the first of six dates on the Skyhawks' fall schedule. UT Martin will also take part in three regular season matches this spring before hosting the 2020 OVC Championships on Feb. 8-9. This marks the fifth time – first since 2012 – that the Skyhawks will host the league's annual marquee event.
