
AIR RIFLE SCORES STAND OUT FOR UT MARTIN IN FIRST MATCH OF THE SEASON AT MEMPHIS

MEMPHIS, Tenn. – The University of Tennessee at Martin rifle squad opened its 2019-20 campaign over the weekend as the Skyhawks came away with several highlighted performances after a matchup against Memphis in the Tiger Open.
UT Martin collected an aggregate score of 4,591 points, including scores of 2,332 in air rifle and 2,259 in smallbore. The Skyhawks were narrowly edged by Memphis in air rifle (2,338) as the host Tigers also chalked up 2,312 smallbore points on its way to the win with 4,650 total points.
Leading the charge for UT Martin in air rifle was senior Kaitlin Korinek, who paced all shooters on both teams with a score of 591. That included back-to-back perfect 100's on her final two strings of targets – which equates to 20 consecutive 10's – to finish on a high note.
Rachel Sprague ranked as the next-best finisher for the Skyhawks, as she earned a score of 584 points. Jennifer Plocinik (582) wasn't too far behind while Jacob Osborne came away with 575 points to complete the team scoring. Abigail Donald also represented UT Martin in air rifle, nabbing 564 points.
In smallbore, it was Sprague's 578 that ranked as the Skyhawks' high score. That included back-to-back 98's in the prone portion of the event while she also chipped in 193 points in standing and 189 points in kneeling.
Korinek dialed up 566 points and was followed by Plocinik (564) and Osborne (551). Kalen Royal additionally competed for UT Martin, finishing with a score of 540.
Overall, Sprague's aggregate score of 1,162 points were the most for any Skyhawk. Korinek came away with 1,157 points while Plocinik and Osborne finished with scores of 1,146 and 1,126, respectively.
"This was a good start to our season," UT Martin head coach MJ Vowell said. "Our aggregate team score this year was much better than last year. Our smallbore needs some work but the team really outdid themselves in air rifle. I have high hopes for the team as we improve and settle down."
The Skyhawks return to action on Sunday, Oct. 6 when they make the short drive to take on Ohio Valley Conference rival Murray State.
