EVANSVILLE, Ind. – A late goal in regulation by University of Tennessee at Martin junior Baylee Arnott sent the match into overtime at Evansville as the Skyhawks came away with a 1-1 draw against the Purple Aces this evening at McCutchan Stadium.
UT Martin (1-0-2) remained unbeaten this season behind a beautiful header by Arnott, who took a long pass from Elin Berggren with a little over five minutes remaining in regulation. Arnott, a Samford transfer, found the back of the net on her first official shot attempt as a Skyhawk.
Overall, UT Martin outshot Evansville by a 10-7 margin, placing six of its shot attempts on goal. The stingy Skyhawk defense limited the Purple Aces to only two shots on goal, holding Evansville scoreless over the final 66 minutes of play tonight.
"Tonight was a story of two very different halves of soccer," UT Martin head coach Phil McNamara said. "Evansville was very good in the first half and we struggled to make an impact on the game. We were outworked and outplayed before the break, eventually conceding from a free kick a minute before halftime. I give credit to our players as somehow they reversed the play in the second half. We played a little more direct and applied better pressure to cause much more problems in the second half."
Reigning Ohio Valley Conference Goalkeeper of the Week Erica Myers came away with one save this evening, snaring the first shot of the match at the 2:13 mark. Alice Adams put the Skyhawks' first shot on goal in the 27th minute before the Purple Aces scored with just 61 seconds left before intermission.
From that point until the 109th minute, the vaunted UT Martin defense did not allow a single shot attempt. That set the tone for the Skyhawk comeback as UT Martin tallied eight of its 10 shots in the second half alone.
Maria Castaldo, Adams and Lotte Koot each peppered Evansville's goalkeeper with shots on goal during a 6:27 span. After Adams put another shot on goal to keep the pressure applied, the Skyhawks broke through with Arnott's equalizer to send the match into overtime.
Neither side would attempt a shot in the first overtime period while the Purple Aces could only manage a wide shot attempt in double overtime.
"It was certainly a learning curve for our team tonight and we are for sure proud of our improvement and response following a difficult first half," McNamara said. "It was another great game on the road against a strong opponent."
The Skyhawks continue their four-match road trip on Sunday, Sept. 1 when they travel to Western Carolina. The match is scheduled to begin at noon.
