MARTIN, Tenn. – The 2019 edition of the University of Tennessee at Martin volleyball squad held its first practice of the fall today, a little under three weeks away from its season opener.
The Skyhawks are entering Year Five of the Jaclynn Wilson Era, returning nine players and five starters from the 2018 team who recorded the most wins for the program since 2011. UT Martin made it back to the Ohio Valley Conference Championship tournament for the first time since 2012, wrapping up the season with a 14-17 overall record last fall.
All-OVC second teamer Hannah Phillips (team-best 2.70 kills per set in OVC play) returns at outside hitter, as she was one of just three Skyhawks to play in all 123 sets last season. Phillips is one of only two seniors on UT Martin's 2019 roster, joining middle blocker Gintare Mackeviciute (top-10 in the OVC with a .291 attack percentage and 0.94 blocks per set in 2018).
The junior trio of Justine Walker (OVC-leading 122 blocks last season), Kenzie Hinshaw (OVC-best 43 service aces in 2018) and Jamie Rys (three double-doubles last fall) round out the returning starters for the Skyhawks.
UT Martin also returns sophomores Logan Wallick, Karen Scanlon, Jessica Reynolds and Addison Conley – who each cracked the starting lineup in their debut seasons in 2018.
Wilson welcomes in five newcomers to the Skyhawk program in junior New Mexico transfer Kayla Long as well as freshmen Kayla Carrell, Lucy Kaufman, Zoe Merriweather and Haeleigh Paulino.
UT Martin officially opens the 2019 campaign on Friday, Aug. 30 when it travels to the Indiana Invitational in Bloomington, Ind. That tournament is the first of four nonconference tournaments (including the Skyhawk Invitational on Sept. 20-21) before OVC play starts on Sept. 24.
