MARTIN, Tenn. – Fifth-year University of Tennessee at Martin head volleyball coach Jaclynn Wilson has revealed the Skyhawks' 2019 schedule, which includes the school's longest homestand since 2011 over the course of the 31-match slate.
UT Martin will take on teams from 11 different conferences in 2019, including a pair of first-time opponents. For the second consecutive year, the Skyhawk Invitational will be held on campus, as UT Martin welcomes in Evansville, Mercer and Little Rock for the tournament on Sept. 20-21.
"We are excited about the depth of our fall schedule," said Wilson, who last fall helped lead the Skyhawks to the Ohio Valley Conference Championship tournament for the first time since 2012. "We start out with a lot of road matches but feel confident that the high level of competition we face in nonconference play will provide us the preparation we desire. We are proud to once again host the Skyhawk Invitational with quality opposition before we roll into the OVC season. This schedule will continually test us – there are no easy matchups throughout."
Year Five of the Wilson Era begins on Aug. 30-31 when the Skyhawks travel to Bloomington, Ind. for the Indiana Invitational. UT Martin faces Marshall for the first time since 1995 and first-time opponent Santa Clara to open the tournament before playing host Indiana and first-time opponent FIU on the final day.
The Skyhawks then make the short jaunt to the Memphis Invitational on Sept. 6-7. UT Martin will square off against Arkansas-Pine Bluff and Gardner-Webb on Day 1 of the event before wrapping up against host Memphis on Day 2.
A trip to the Show Me State follows as the Skyhawks will participate in the Marcia E. Hamilton Classic hosted by Saint Louis. UT Martin once again battles Marshall to start the tournament on Sept. 13 before finishing out against Troy and Saint Louis on Sept. 14.
A midweek matchup at Southern Illinois three days later puts an end to the Skyhawks' 11-match road stretch to start the 2019 campaign.
UT Martin's home debut will coincide with the Skyhawk Invitational, which will be held for the fifth time in the last nine seasons. The action-packed tournament will feature four matches on Friday, Sept. 20 and two matches on Saturday, Sept. 21.
UT Martin heads back on the road for its first four OVC matches, beginning with a Tuesday, Sept. 24 matchup at Southeast Missouri. The Skyhawks pay a visit to Jacksonville State on Sept. 28 before opening the month of October at defending league champions Murray State (tournament) and Austin Peay (regular season).
Five consecutive home matches then take place from Oct. 11-22, marking the program's longest homestand in eight years. UT Martin will take on SIUE and Eastern Illinois during the Oct. 11-12 weekend before taking on Eastern Kentucky and Morehead State on Oct. 18-19. A nonconference matchup against Middle Tennessee on Oct. 22 is also included in the lengthy home stretch.
A quick road trip to Music City against conference rivals Belmont (Oct. 25) and Tennessee State (Oct. 26) follows before the final homestand of the season. The Skyhawks host Southeast Missouri on Tuesday, Oct. 29 and Tennessee Tech on Saturday, Nov. 2 to start off a span of four straight home matches. UT Martin concludes the home portion of its schedule against Austin Peay (Nov. 8) and Murray State (Nov. 9).
The regular season comes to a close with road dates at Eastern Illinois and at SIUE on Nov. 15-16.
The Skyhawks will go for their 15th appearance in the OVC Championship tournament, which is tentatively scheduled for Nov. 20-25. For the 14th consecutive year, the league's marquee event will be held at the site of the regular season champion.
