UT Martin (23-29, 11-18 OVC) was led at the dish by Blake Daniels and Casey Harford as both men plated a pair of runs. Daniels also paced the club in knocks with two on the day including a two-run homer. Stoner did not get a hit but did get credited with an RBI. Rounding out the Skyhawks in the hit column was Sean Dixson, Blake Davis, Ethan Whitley, Tyson Cox and Harford.
Winston Cannon (6-8) clocked in for six strong innings of work today as he allowed just three earned runs to ensure a quality start. He conceded five knocks and a walk but fanned seven Golden Eagles in his time on the bump. David Hussey logged his first career save as he tossed three innings of two-run baseball. The reliever was tagged for just three hits and allowed only one walk as he forced five Tennessee Tech batters to whiff.
Cannon was dealing early as he opened the contest with back-to-back strikeouts, both of the swinging variety. He then induced a ground out to short to end the frame quickly.
The Golden Eagles pushed one run across in both the second and third innings to take a 2-0 lead.
Cannon regained his footing in the fourth as he sat down the side in order again. He fanned the first batter he saw before forcing a pop out to second base and a groundout to short.
UT Martin used a six-run fifth inning for the deciding factor in the matchup. Davis led off the inning with an infield single to third base and moved on up to second on a throwing error by the third baseman. Daniels then sent a two-run blast to left field to tie the contest up. Edwards would then be plunked before a Dixson single to right field put runners at the corners. Eldridge was issued four straight balls to juice the bases. Stoner would be hit by a pitch for the easy plating of Edwards. Harford then shot a hit back up the middle that would be good enough to plate both Dixson and Eldridge. A Golden Eagle balk was called that allowed Stoner to come in and give the Skyhawks a 6-2 advantage.
Tennessee Tech put up another run in the sixth on a solo homer to push back by a score of 6-3.
UT Martin added on a run in the sixth as Daniels got things started with a first-pitch three-bagger to left field. Edwards would then reach on a throwing error by the third baseman which allowed Daniels to come in and extend the Skyhawk lead out to 7-2.
Hussey came on in the seventh inning and sat down the Golden Eagles in order via fly out to right field and a pair of swinging strikeouts. The eighth inning saw him face some slight resistance as he conceded a one-out double down the right field line. However, he kept a cool head to induce a groundout to first base followed by a whiff to get out of the inning.
Tennessee Tech tacked on a couple of runs in the ninth for the final score of 7-5 but not before Hussey would fan a pair of Golden Eagles.
UT Martin wraps up the regular season tomorrow with the series finale against Tennessee Tech. First pitch is slated for 1 p.m. with Senior Day festivities to precede the contest.
